About the Role:
As a GovCloud Data Infrastructure Engineer, you will be a key member of the Data Platform Operations team, responsible for building out the AWS GovCloud environment. You will design and implement the foundational infrastructure-as-code (IaC), establish database platforms, configure application access management, and create multi-environment systems to establish a secure, compliant, and reliable government cloud data infrastructure. This is a greenfield opportunity to architect and build a modern GovCloud platform aligned with FedRAMP and compliance requirements.
What You’ll Do:
Design and build AWS GovCloud infrastructure, establishing the foundational architecture, security compliance (FedRAMP, FISMA), network security, and platform operations across dev, preprod, and production environments.
Establish PostgreSQL database infrastructure in GovCloud, including initial setup, performance optimization frameworks, backup/recovery architecture, replication strategies, high availability configuration, and security hardening standards.
Design and implement infrastructure-as-code from the ground up using Chef, creating comprehensive cookbooks, recipes, and automation frameworks for server provisioning, configuration management, and repeatable deployments.
Integrate application access controls and identity management systems with Google SAML integration, establishing secure authentication.
Deploy and configure Business Intelligence infrastructure in GovCloud from scratch, including initial installation, architecture design, performance optimization, user management frameworks, and authentication system integration.
Architect and implement multi-environment infrastructure from the ground up, following AWS best practices for network segmentation, security boundaries, environment isolation, and promotion workflows.
Design and implement comprehensive monitoring, alerting, and observability systems for infrastructure and data pipelines, including creating runbooks, operational standards, and disaster recovery procedures.
Provide ongoing operational support by monitoring, triaging, and resolving data pipeline and infrastructure incidents including ETL/ELT failures, database performance issues, and access problems.
Collaborate with security, compliance, and data engineering teams to ensure infrastructure design meets government security requirements and compliance frameworks from inception.
Partner with DevOps and data engineering teams to establish CI/CD pipelines, data pipeline orchestration, automated testing frameworks, and infrastructure deployment automation using Chef and AWS native tools
Utilize AI technologies to enhance decision-making, streamline workflows and processes, improve efficiency and drive business outcomes.
What You’ll Need:
6+ years of experience in infrastructure engineering and operations, with at least 3+ years of hands-on AWS experience
Proven experience building cloud infrastructure from scratch, with demonstrated ability to take greenfield projects from design through production deployment.
Strong PostgreSQL administration experience including performance tuning, replication, backup/recovery, security configuration, and high availability setup.
Expertise in PostgresSQL administration for data pipeline validation, query optimization, troubleshooting data issues, and evaluating ETL/ELT processes.
Strong Python programming skills for automation, data pipeline monitoring, troubleshooting, and operational scripting.
Proven hands-on experience with Chef for infrastructure-as-code, including creating and maintaining cookbooks, recipes, roles, and environments in greenfield deployments.
Experience configuring enterprise identity and access management, specifically Google SAML integration and SSO implementations.
Proven experience administering Tableau Server or other BI application including installation, configuration, performance optimization, security, and user management.
Strong understanding of multi-environment infrastructure design, including network architecture, security boundaries, and deployment automation from initial design through implementation.
Proficiency in scripting languages (Bash, Ruby) for automation, monitoring, and operational tasks.
Experience with infrastructure monitoring and observability tools (CloudWatch, Datadog, Nagios, etc.).
Knowledge of configuration management, CI/CD platforms (Jenkins, GitLab), and version control systems (Git).
Strong understanding of network security, firewall management, VPC configuration, and secure architecture patterns.
Self-starter with ability to work independently on greenfield projects, make architectural decisions, and drive projects from concept to completion.
Excellent communication and collaboration skills with ability to work with cross-functional teams including security, compliance, and engineering.
Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Computer Engineering, or related IT discipline; or equivalent experience.
Proven experience utilizing AI technologies to enhance decision-making, streamline workflows and processes, improve efficiency and drive business outcomes.
Security clearance eligible or ability to obtain government security clearance.
