The Defense Sector at Leidos, supporting the Maritime Readiness Division, is seeking a Fleet Chief Engineer to support a dynamic high growth organization. Fleet Chief Engineer will work remotely and support a wide variety of manned and unmanned vessels across numerous programs.
The Fleet Chief Engineer serves as the senior engineering authority for assigned vessels and is the engineering counterpart to the Port Captain, providing leadership, technical oversight, and direction for fleet engineering operations, maintenance, and regulatory compliance. This position manages engineering personnel and establishes fleet-wide engineering practices, procedures, maintenance standards, and documentation requirements to ensure safe, reliable, and mission-ready vessel operations. The Fleet Chief Engineer provides oversight of preventive and corrective maintenance, repairs, technical troubleshooting, engineering readiness, shipyard and availability activities, and compliance with applicable U.S. Coast Guard, American Bureau of Shipping, company, and customer requirements. The role also oversees the effective use and configuration of the Vessel Management System, ensuring maintenance, compliance, technical documentation, equipment data, and engineering records are accurate, standardized, and effectively utilized across the fleet.
The Fleet Chief Engineer works closely with Port Captains, vessel Chief Engineers, program leadership, maintenance personnel, technical teams, subcontractors, and customers to identify engineering risks, establish priorities, and resolve issues that could affect vessel availability or mission execution. The position serves as the engineering representative on the Safety Management System Steering Committee, contributing technical expertise to SMS governance, policy development, risk management, regulatory compliance, and continuous improvement initiatives. The Fleet Chief Engineer mentors and develops engineering personnel, evaluates engineering performance and practices across the fleet, supports technical hiring and qualification efforts, and drives standardization and lessons learned to improve safety, reliability, maintainability, and lifecycle performance of fleet assets.
Primary Responsibilities
Report to Logistics Platform Manager for vessel operations across programs
Serve as the senior engineering authority for the fleet and the primary engineering counterpart to the Port Captain.
Lead, supervise, and develop vessel Chief Engineers, Port Engineers, and other assigned engineering personnel.
Establish and maintain fleet-wide engineering practices, procedures, standards, and technical guidance to promote safe, reliable, and consistent vessel operations.
Provide oversight of preventive and corrective maintenance, repairs, troubleshooting, equipment reliability, and engineering readiness across assigned vessels.
Manage the engineering configuration and administration of the fleet Vessel Management System, including maintenance, compliance, equipment data, technical documentation, and reporting modules.
Ensure vessel maintenance records, engineering documentation, equipment histories, and compliance records are accurate, complete, standardized, and maintained within the Vessel Management System.
Serve as the engineering representative on the Safety Management System Steering Committee and provide technical input into SMS policies, procedures, risk controls, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Support development, implementation, and periodic review of engineering-related Safety Management System procedures.
Monitor vessel engineering readiness and identify technical issues, maintenance risks, equipment deficiencies, and emerging reliability concerns that could impact vessel availability or mission execution.
Coordinate with Port Captains, vessel Masters, Chief Engineers, maintenance teams, program leadership, and technical personnel to establish maintenance priorities and resolve fleet engineering issues.
Provide technical oversight for planned maintenance availabilities, shipyard periods, dry dockings, emergent repairs, equipment upgrades, and vessel modification activities.
Support inspection, survey, and certification activities involving the U.S. Coast Guard, American Bureau of Shipping, and other applicable regulatory or classification authorities.
Ensure engineering activities and documentation comply with company policies, contract requirements, applicable regulations, classification standards, and customer requirements.
Review and approve engineering work practices, maintenance strategies, technical procedures, log forms, equipment records, and other fleet engineering documentation.
Develop and maintain standardized engineering processes for equipment inspections, maintenance planning, troubleshooting, casualty response, and repair execution.
Provide technical guidance and subject matter expertise for vessel modifications, new equipment integration, system upgrades, and engineering configuration changes.
Evaluate engineering performance across the fleet and develop corrective actions to improve equipment reliability, maintenance effectiveness, safety, and operational readiness.
Promote effective engine room resource management, safe engineering practices, and consistent execution of maintenance and operational procedures.
Lead engineering lessons-learned activities and ensure technical knowledge, recurring issues, and successful practices are shared across the fleet.
Participate in the recruitment, interview, selection, qualification, and onboarding of senior engineering personnel.
Mentor Chief Engineers and other engineering staff and support development of technical competency, leadership capability, and succession planning.
Coordinate with procurement, logistics, warehouse, and subcontract personnel to ensure required parts, spares, materials, technical services, and vendor support are available to meet maintenance requirements.
Review engineering-related vendor and subcontractor performance and provide technical input into scopes of work and repair requirements.
Support casualty response and emergent technical issues by coordinating engineering resources, technical expertise, vendors, and shore-side support.
Provide engineering status, risk, maintenance, and readiness information to program leadership and customers as required.
Drive continuous improvement in fleet engineering operations through standardization, performance metrics, technical analysis, and effective use of the Vessel Management System.
Basic Qualifications
Position requires the ability to perform in an arduous duty environment.
USCG Chief Engineer License with corresponding STCW Certifications
Minimum of 8 years of progressively responsible maritime engineering experience, including service as a Chief Engineer, Assistant Engineer, Port Engineer, or equivalent senior marine engineering role.
Experience with administering computerized Vessel Management Systems or maintenance management systems used to manage preventive maintenance, corrective maintenance, equipment records, compliance activities, and technical documentation.
Ability to lift 40lbs
Must be able to communicate effectively
Must be a US Citizen
Ability to obtain and maintain required security, facility, and vessel access credentials.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience operating in a joint, Department of Defense, Military Sealift Command, U.S. Navy, or similarly complex maritime environment is highly desirable.

Pay Range:
Pay Range $131,300.00 - $237,350.00The Leidos pay range for this job level is a general guideline only and not a guarantee of compensation or salary.
