Software Engineering Senior Manager
About this role:
Wells Fargo is seeking a Software Engineering Senior Manager.
In this role, you will:
- Manage, coach, and develop a team or teams of experienced engineers and engineering managers in roles with moderate complexity and risk, responsible for building high quality capabilities with modern technology
- Ensure adherence to the Banking Platform Architecture, and meeting non-functional requirements with each release
- Partner with, engage and influence architects and experienced engineers to incorporate Wells Fargo Technology technical strategies, while understanding next generation domain architecture and enable application migration paths to target architecture; for example cloud readiness, application modernization, data strategy
- Function as the technical representative for the product during cross-team collaborative efforts and planning
- Identify and recommend opportunities for driving escalated resolution of technology roadblocks including code, build and deployment while also managing overall software development cycle and security standards
- Determine appropriate strategy and actions to act as an escalation partner for scrum masters and the teams to meet moderate to high risk deliverables and help remove impediments, obstacles, and friction while encouraging constant learning, experimentation, and continual improvement
- Build engineering skills side-by-side in the codebase, conduct peer reviews to evaluate quality and solution alignment to technical direction, and guide design, as needed
- Interpret, develop and ensure security, stability, and scalability within functions of technology with moderate complexity, as well as identify, manage and mitigate technology and enterprise risk
- Collaborate with, partner with and influence Product Managers/Product Owners to drive user satisfaction, influence technology requirements and priorities in the product roadmap, promote innovative and intelligent solutions, generate corporate value and articulate technical strategy while being a solid advocate of agile and DevOps practices
- Interact directly with third party vendors and technology service providers
- Manage allocation of people and financial resources to ensure commitments are met and align with strategic objectives in technology engineering
- Hire, build and guide a culture of talent development to have the skills required to effectively design and deliver innovative solutions for product areas and products to meet business objectives and strategy, as well as conduct performance management for engineers and managers
Required Qualifications:
- 7+ years of Software Engineering experience, or equivalent demonstrated through one or a combination of the following: work experience, training, military experience, education
- 3+ years of management or leadership experience

Manage and mentor 15-25 software engineers across multiple Agile teams, fostering a culture of accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement.
- Drive workforce planning, hiring, onboarding, career development, succession planning, performance management, and employee engagement initiatives.
- Coach engineers and technical leads on technical excellence, delivery execution, and leadership capabilities.
- Foster collaboration across Product, Architecture, Security, Operations, Data Science, and Business stakeholders.
- Manage delivery of strategic programs while balancing business priorities, technical debt, operational stability, and team capacity.
- Provide technical leadership for enterprise-scale distributed systems, cloud-native applications, and AI-enabled solutions.
- Partner with architects and senior engineers to define architecture standards, design patterns, and engineering best practices.
- Guide the architecture and design of scalable, resilient, event-driven applications leveraging AWS and/or GCP services.
- Drive modernization initiatives from monolithic platforms to cloud-native microservices and event-driven architectures.
- Manage technical roadmaps and ensure alignment between business objectives, architecture strategy, and engineering execution.
- Promote secure engineering practices, including modern authentication and authorization patterns such as OAuth2, OIDC, SAML, JWT, and IAM solutions.
- Conduct design reviews and provide technical guidance to engineering teams while empowering engineers to own technical decisions.
- Identify opportunities to leverage AI/ML and Generative AI capabilities to improve customer experience, engineering productivity, and operational efficiency.
- Drive adoption of DevSecOps, CI/CD, observability, platform engineering, and engineering productivity improvements.
- Ensure production stability, performance, availability, resiliency, security, and compliance requirements are met.
- Lead major incident management, root-cause analysis, and continuous service improvement initiatives.
- Partner with Product Managers, Architects, and Business stakeholders to translate business requirements into scalable technology solutions.
- Drive Agile best practices including sprint planning, backlog management, release planning, stakeholder communication, and delivery governance.
Job Expectations:

7+ years of software engineering experience with 3+ years leading engineering teams and technical programs.
- Proven experience managing multiple Agile teams comprising 15-25 engineers and technical leads.
- Strong experience in hiring, talent development, performance management, employee engagement, and succession planning.
- Demonstrated ability to coach engineers and develop future technical and people leaders.
- Strong stakeholder management and executive communication skills with the ability to influence technology and business decisions.
- Deep expertise in Java 17/21, Spring Boot, REST APIs, Microservices, and Distributed Systems.
- Strong experience architecting and designing scalable, high-throughput, event-driven applications using AWS and/or GCP cloud platforms.
- Hands-on experience with Kafka, Pub/Sub, Kinesis, or equivalent event-streaming platforms.
- Strong understanding of cloud architecture, resiliency patterns, scalability engineering, and performance optimization.
- Experience implementing modern authentication and authorization solutions including OAuth2, OpenID Connect (OIDC), SAML, JWT, MFA, and IAM platforms.
- Experience building secure, cloud-native applications with strong focus on reliability and operational excellence.
- Strong experience with SQL and NoSQL databases.
- Experience with Kubernetes, Docker, OpenShift, EKS, GKE, or equivalent container platforms.
- Strong knowledge of CI/CD, Infrastructure as Code, GitHub Actions, Jenkins, Terraform, Maven/Gradle, and DevSecOps practices.
- Minimum 2+ years of hands-on experience with Python development.
- Experience working on AI/ML or Generative AI solutions and integrating AI capabilities into enterprise applications.
- Understanding of LLMs, RAG architectures, AI orchestration frameworks, prompt engineering, and responsible AI practices.
- Ability to identify and drive AI-enabled use cases that improve engineering efficiency, automation, and business outcomes.
- Experience leading modernization programs from monolithic applications to cloud-native microservices and event-driven architectures.
- Experience in Identity & Access Management (IAM), Security, Financial Services, or Banking domains.
- Exposure to Domain-Driven Design (DDD), Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), Platform Engineering, and Zero Trust principles.
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, or a related field.
