Compensation: $170 to $225 Yearly

We are looking for an accomplished Controller to oversee property accounting operations for a retail real estate portfolio in Calabasas, California. This position leads a multi-functional accounting team and ensures dependable financial reporting, operational discipline, and strong cross-functional partnership. The ideal candidate brings deep technical accounting knowledge, a collaborative leadership style, and the ability to improve processes while supporting sound business decisions.

Responsibilities:
• Direct the monthly, quarterly, and year-end close cycles, ensuring financial statements, reconciliations, journal entries, accruals, and supporting documentation are completed accurately and on schedule.
• Manage property accounting activities across accounts payable, accounts receivable, collections, and general ledger functions to maintain reliable financial operations.
• Review common area maintenance and tenant recovery reconciliations, resolve billing issues, and oversee adjustments related to tenant charges.
• Guide the annual budgeting process for properties, while contributing to forecasts, variance reviews, and financial analysis that supports planning and performance decisions.
• Establish, refine, and enforce accounting policies, internal controls, and reporting procedures to improve consistency, efficiency, and scalability.
• Maintain insurance documentation for managed properties, coordinate renewal data for blanket policies, and support workers’ compensation audit requirements.
• Oversee insurance claim activity by working with brokers, property teams, and other stakeholders to facilitate timely resolution.
• Lead and develop the accounting team by setting expectations, coaching performance, encouraging accountability, and fostering a collaborative environment.
• Support the financial and accounting components of property acquisitions, dispositions, and management changes, including related reporting and coordination.
• Partner with property management, senior leadership, auditors, tax professionals, lenders, and ownership groups to address accounting matters and deliver required financial information.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline.
• At least 7 years of progressively responsible accounting experience, including prior leadership of accounting staff.
• Strong background in commercial real estate, retail real estate, or property management accounting preferred.
• Advanced knowledge of financial reporting, general ledger accounting, month-end close, reconciliations, tenant recoveries, and property budgeting.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and experience with property accounting or property management systems; MRI experience is strongly preferred and Avid is a plus.
• Demonstrated ability to strengthen controls, resolve complex issues, and manage multiple deadlines with accuracy and attention to detail.
• Experience using AI and emerging technologies to improve accounting workflows, reporting quality, and business insight.

Compensation

$170,000.00-$225,000.00 Yearly
