The West Side Federation for Senior and Supportive Housing, Inc. (WSFSSH) is a community-based organization responding to the need for low-cost housing. Our mission is to provide safe, affordable housing with supportive services within a residential setting that enhances the independence and dignity of each person. WSFSSH develops, manages, and provides social services in housing for low-income persons, especially those who are older, who have experienced homelessness and who live with mental illness.

Job Summary 

The Real Estate Development team is responsible for all activities related to the acquisition, rehab, and new construction of 100% affordable housing for low-income seniors. The Real Estate Development Fellow will provide critical capacity to the team during the first year of WSFSSH’s new strategic plan by supporting the advancement of Housing objectives related to resident-centered design, community engagement, aging-in-place, and end ensuring equity across our housing portfolio.

Job Duties & Responsibilities 

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Research inclusive design principles that support aging in place, including trauma-informed design and other approaches that extend beyond baseline accessibility requirements
  • Review existing conditions, operational challenges, and resident demographics across WSFSSH’s SRO portfolio
  • Solicit and incorporate feedback from residents, staff, and community stakeholders into the design and renovation of WSFSSH properties
  • Coordinate and collaborate with internal and external project stakeholders such as property management, social services, architects, engineers, government agencies, etc.
  • Support the Real Estate Development team by taking meeting minutes, compiling due diligence, assisting with funding applications, and performing other tasks as needed

Required Qualifications

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong judgment, problem-solving ability, and comfort managing ambiguity
  • Completion of at least one semester in a Master’s degree program in city planning, public policy, public administration, urban policy, or related discipline by September 2026
  • Continued enrollment in the Master’s degree program through the end of the 2027 spring semester
