Job Title: Cybersecurity Analyst Intern
Location: Charlottesville, Virginia
Shift: 1st
Starting Compensation Range: $23.49 - $29.55 per hour
This paid, hourly position is ideal for a student or early-career individual interested in security operations, threat detection, and incident response. The intern will gain hands-on experience reviewing security alerts, investigating anomalies, and helping ensure timely follow-up on potential security issues across the company's hybrid IT environment.
What You Will Do:
- Review daily security logs and alerts generated by endpoint detection tools (e.g., EDR platforms)
- Identify, triage, and document suspicious or anomalous activity
- Escalate confirmed or high-priority issues to senior security staff following established procedures
- Track open security tickets/alerts through to resolution and maintain accurate documentation
- Assist with basic threat research to help distinguish false positives from genuine risks
- Support the team in identifying recurring patterns or trends across log data
- Help maintain logs, reports, and dashboards used for internal reporting
- Perform other duties as assigned
What We’re Looking For:
- Currently pursuing a degree in Cybersecurity, Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field (or equivalent training/certification path)
- Basic understanding of networking concepts (TCP/IP, firewalls, DNS)
- Familiarity with common cybersecurity concepts (malware, phishing, endpoint security)
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow documented procedures
- Good written communication skills for documenting findings clearly
- Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding sensitive security information
- Eagerness to learn; no prior professional experience required
- Exposure to a SIEM or EDR tool (e.g., Huntress, Splunk, Microsoft Sentinel), preferred
- Coursework or certifications such as CompTIA Security+, Network+, or similar, preferred
- Basic scripting knowledge (PowerShell, Python), preferred
What Success Looks Like In This Role:
- Reviewing daily security logs and alerts generated by endpoint detection tools (e.g., EDR platforms)
- Accurate identification, triage, and documenting of suspicious or anomalous activity
- Escalating confirmed or high-priority issues to senior security staff
- Accurately tracking open security tickets/alerts through to resolution documentation

This is a paid, hourly, part-time position. Hourly rate is commensurate with experience and academic level, in accordance with Carter Machinery's internship pay guidelines. Actual base pay may vary based on experience, skills, qualifications, education, geographic location, and other relevant business considerations. In addition to base pay, the compensation package may include participation in performance-based incentive programs (e.g., discretionary or non-discretionary plans), as well as overtime eligibility depending on the role.
