Position Description

Employees in this classification are responsible for performing a wide variety of patient care activities in an assigned correctional facility. They function within their legal scope of practice and in accordance with the policies and procedures of the organization and practice setting. Work is performed under the direction of a registered nurse as part of a total correctional managed health care team in providing safe and competent care to patients.

Major/Essential Functions

  • Provides direct care to patients within the nursing Scope of Practice.
  • Performs sick call, assess and treat acute problems using nursing protocols and refer patients to an advanced medical provider, behavioral health provider, or dentist as appropriate.
  • Performs nursing rounds for patients in the segregated housing.
  • Administers medications as ordered via oral, subcutaneous, intramuscular, topical, and ophthalmic routes.
  • Uses established tools for gathering subjective and objective data, referring abnormal findings to the medical, dental, or behavioral health provider.
  • Collects laboratory specimens and prepare specimens for laboratory processing.
  • Respond to emergencies and render care to stabilize the patient and/or transport to appropriate level of care.
  • Handles properly the use of equipment, materials, and supplies.
  • Communicates proficiently in order to create positive rapport with patients, coworkers, officers, and civilians.
  • Establishes and maintains positive working relationships in a multidisciplinary environment.
  • Has knowledge of state regulations (HIPPA/PHI).
  • Maintains certifications and required educational compliance.
  • Proficient documenting patient findings in the electronic health records (EHR).


Occasional Duties

  • Assist duties assigned with the Infection Control Nurse.
  • Assist with preparation to required audits as necessary.


Required Qualifications

Current Vocational Nurse License in the State of Texas, or ability to transfer license to Texas, or scheduled to complete a program of vocational nursing within 120 days of applying for a position . Current CPR certification. Graduated from an approved accredited nursing program. New graduates must pass the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX- PN) on the first attempt. No experience required.
