Senior Applications Architect
Senior Application Architect
- Location: Candidates must reside in Atlanta Georgia.
- This position does not offer sponsorship or C2C now or in the future.
- Onsite role
We are seeking a Senior Application Architect to lead the design, modernization, and transformation of complex enterprise applications. This individual will work closely with engineering teams, business stakeholders, and vendors to define architecture, guide technical initiatives, and support the modernization of legacy and on-premises applications into scalable cloud and hybrid environments.
The ideal candidate has grown from a hands-on software engineering or development background into an architecture role and remains technically involved. This is a technical leadership role without direct people management responsibilities.
What We're Looking For
We are looking for someone who has started as a developer or engineer and progressed into an architecture role. This person should have strong hands-on technical knowledge but also be able to operate at an architectural and strategic level.
The ideal candidate has experience leading or contributing significantly to a large-scale application transformation, understands the challenges of modernizing legacy environments, and has helped move applications and data from on-premises infrastructure into cloud or hybrid environments.
They should be comfortable leading technical initiatives, working with vendors and stakeholders, mentoring engineers, and getting involved in technical decisions when needed.
This version keeps the actual must-haves front and center without getting bogged down in every possible responsibility.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead application modernization and transformation initiatives across legacy, on-premises, hybrid, and cloud environments.
- Assess existing applications and recommend modernization strategies, including refactoring, replatforming, migration, replacement, or retirement.
- Design scalable target-state architectures, including applications, integrations, APIs, data flows, security, and deployment models.
- Lead and support cloud migration initiatives, including moving applications and data from on-premises environments to the cloud.
- Develop and promote architecture standards, design patterns, and best practices.
- Partner with developers, infrastructure, security, product teams, business stakeholders, and vendors throughout the design and delivery process.
- Lead architecture and design reviews and ensure solutions meet security, scalability, reliability, and performance requirements.
- Design API-first and event-driven architectures using REST, GraphQL, messaging, and streaming technologies.
- Support architecture decisions involving mobile platforms and ensure mobile applications integrate effectively with enterprise systems and APIs.
- Promote modern engineering practices, including CI/CD, DevSecOps, automation, containers, and secure software development.
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to engineers and technical team members.
- Evaluate vendor solutions and ensure third-party technologies align with architecture and long-term technology strategy.
Qualifications:
Required Experience
- 10+ years of experience in software engineering, application development, solutions architecture, or application architecture.
- At least 3–4 years of experience as a Lead Application Architect, Application Architect, Solutions Architect, or similar role supporting large-scale modernization initiatives.
- Proven experience leading or playing a significant role in enterprise application transformation and modernization.
- Strong experience with cloud migration, including moving applications and/or data from on-premises environments to cloud or hybrid platforms.
- Experience leading technical projects and initiatives and mentoring engineers, without requiring formal people management experience.
- Strong communication skills and experience working with business stakeholders, technical teams, and external vendors.
- Financial services or other highly regulated industry experience is preferred.
Required Technical Skills
- Strong experience designing and modernizing enterprise-scale applications.
- Strong experience with cloud and hybrid environments, with AWS preferred.
- Deep understanding of:
- Microservices and modular monoliths
- API-first architecture using REST and/or GraphQL
- Event-driven architecture, messaging, and streaming
- Distributed systems and application integration
- Hands-on experience with Docker and Kubernetes and/or OpenShift.
- Strong understanding of CI/CD, DevSecOps, automation, and modern software delivery practices.
- Proficiency with Vue.js preferred or React.
- Experience with Java and/or Node.js is a plus.
- Experience with or understanding of mobile application architecture and mobile platforms.
- Strong understanding of application security and security compliance.
- Experience designing applications for scalability, reliability, resilience, performance, monitoring, and observability.
- Python experience is a plus but not required.
