Payroll Specialist – General Job Description
Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced Payroll Specialist to support day-to-day payroll operations for a workforce of approximately 550 employees. This role will work closely with the payroll team to ensure accurate and timely processing, maintain compliance with applicable payroll regulations, and provide additional support during a UKG implementation and go-live.
The ideal candidate will have strong hands-on payroll experience, including union payroll, and be highly proficient with UKG. This position may have the potential to transition from temporary to permanent.
Key Responsibilities
- Process payroll for approximately 550 employees across multiple union contracts.
- Review and process employee timesheets, ensuring accuracy and compliance with company policies and union requirements.
- Support payroll operations during UKG implementation and go-live.
- Reconcile year-to-date employee hours and payroll-related data as needed.
- Process payroll-related accounts payable transactions.
- Manage payroll deductions and payments related to long-term and short-term disability programs.
- Administer payroll items associated with employee medical programs and benefits.
- Process employee garnishments accurately and in accordance with applicable regulations.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local payroll requirements, including tax calculations, L& I requirements, and compensatory time.
- Research and resolve payroll discrepancies and employee payroll questions.
- Troubleshoot payroll system issues and assist with process improvements within UKG.
- Maintain accurate payroll records and documentation.
- Partner closely with payroll, HR, accounting, and other internal teams as needed.

Qualifications
- Previous hands-on payroll processing experience required.
- Strong UKG experience required.
- Union payroll experience strongly preferred.
- Experience processing payroll for a mid-to-large employee population preferred.
- Strong knowledge of payroll taxes, deductions, garnishments, benefits, and payroll compliance.
- Ability to work accurately in a deadline-driven environment.
- Strong reconciliation, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating with a payroll team.
