Position Description

Employees in this classification perform responsible professional nursing care at a unit. Responsible for the care and treatment of patients in accordance with accepted nursing and medical standards; administrative nursing personnel. Supervises other subordinate clinic personnel. Work is performed under correctional clinic conditions; position requires a high degree of contact with patients, other clinic personnel, and outside professionals.

Major/Essential Functions

  • Clinical Operations - Provides direct and indirect nursing care to patients in accordance with RN scope of practice and departmental standards. Performs comprehensive assessments, develops and implements care plans, and evaluates patient outcomes. Ensures greater than or equal to 95% compliance with clinical protocols and that 100% of patient interactions are documented same day in the health record.
  • Care Coordination and Clinical Decision-making - Coordinates patient care across disciplines, including providers, custody, and external partners. Initiates referrals, follow-ups, and continuity of care activities. Ensures timely coordination of care with greater than or equal to 95% adherence to referral and follow-up timelines.
  • Medication Administration and Management - Administers medications and monitors patient response in accordance with clinical policies and RN scope of practice. Ensures 100% adherence to medication administration standards and maintains greater than or equal to 98% documentation accuracy in medication systems and patient health records.
  • Patient Assessment and Triage - Receives, assesses, and prioritizes patient care requests using clinical judgment. Ensures 100% of requests are addressed within established timeframes, and documentation is accurate and complete to reduce delays in care.
  • Clinical Oversight and Team Support - Provides guidance and oversight to LVNs and other clinical staff. Ensures greater than or equal to 95% of delegated tasks ae completed within assigned timeframes, and all identified patient care concerns are escalated within department-defined response windows. Reviews documentation for completeness and accuracy, supporting quality and compliance standards.
  • Other duties as assigned - Completes additional responsibilities reasonably within the scope of the RN role as assigned. Ensures tasks are completed within established timelines and meet departmental quality and compliance standards.


Required Qualifications

Current RN License in the State of Texas, or ability to transfer license to Texas, or scheduled to complete a program of nursing within 120 days of applying for a position. Graduated from an approved accredited nursing program. New graduates must pass the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX- RN) on the first attempt. No experience required.

Preferred Qualifications

Current RN License in the State of Texas, or ability to transfer license to Texas, and 5 years of experience in nursing (LVN/RN), with at least 3 years of experience as an RN. Acute care (Med/Surg, ICU, ER) nursing experience; strong physical assessment skills; Ability to communicate effectively with members of the interdisciplinary healthcare team; Flexible and dependable, with the ability to adapt to a variety of clinical practice settings.
