Position Overview

Our client, a growing SaaS company in San Mateo, is seeking a Payroll Accountant to support payroll accounting, reconciliations, and general accounting activities. This position will work closely with Payroll, HR, and Finance to ensure payroll is accurately recorded and reconciled while supporting the month-end close process.

Key Responsibilities

• Record and reconcile payroll transactions to the general ledger.
• Prepare payroll-related journal entries and accruals.
• Perform payroll reconciliations and investigate discrepancies.
• Review payroll reports for accuracy and completeness.
• Support monthly, quarterly, and year-end close activities.
• Reconcile payroll taxes, benefits, deductions, and other payroll-related accounts.
• Partner with Payroll and HR to resolve payroll and accounting discrepancies.
• Assist with multi-state payroll accounting and compliance.
• Support payroll audits and provide requested documentation.
• Assist with W-2 and year-end payroll reporting.
• Maintain accurate payroll accounting records and documentation.
• Identify and improve payroll accounting processes and internal controls.
• Provide support for ad hoc accounting and finance projects.

Qualifications:

• 2+ years of payroll accounting or payroll experience with strong accounting exposure.
• Experience with journal entries, account reconciliations, and general ledger accounting.
• Understanding of payroll taxes, benefits, deductions, and payroll-related accruals.
• Experience with multi-state payroll preferred.
• Strong Excel skills; VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP and PivotTables preferred.
• Experience with ERP/accounting systems such as NetSuite, Workday, Sage Intacct, or SAP preferred.
• Payroll system experience with ADP, Workday, UKG, Paylocity, Paycom, or Dayforce is a plus.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to handle confidential information.
• Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
