Clinical Assistant

Position Description

Employees in this classification provide patient care management to an assigned clinic in the areas of clerical and clinical duties. In the clinical setting, the employee receives direct supervision from a physician or nursing supervisor in either oral or written form. In the office setting, the employee receives direct supervision from the department administrator. Work is performed under usual office and clinic conditions, and may be stressful when working under emergency conditions.

Major/Essential Functions

  • Schedules patients for appointments and enters sick call requests (SCRS) into the appropriate systems while checking and monitoring access to care standards.
  • Responsible for ensuring protected health information (PHI) is scanned into the Electronic Health Record (EHR).
  • Assist in processing through our patient through management system, (PTM).
  • Schedules and completes paperwork for record reviews.
  • Copies records for the patient liaison, attorney general, and others who are authorized to receive and/or review PHI.
  • Attends unit/departmental meetings and serves as a courier to facilitate the operation.
  • Provides clinical support, including performing phlebotomy duties as required and reports abnormal findings or processing errors to the charge nurse.
  • Responsible for proper collection and preparation of specimens.
  • Checks and ensures lab equipment is properly functioning and maintains a temperature log.
  • Serves as a Telehealth Presenter as needed.


Required Qualifications

A minimum of a High School diploma or equivalent. Graduation from an approved certified program for assistants in the area of required specialty. Certification by an approved accredited certifying agency in the specialty that particular work will be performed.

Preferred Qualifications

At least 6 months experience working within a Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) correctional facility.
Prior experience in Correctional Facility Medical Records.
Current Phlebotomy certification.
