Sr. Accountant

Compensation: $31.66 to $36.66 Hourly

We are looking for a Sr. Accountant to join a non-profit organization in New York, New York on a Long-term Contract assignment. This position will play a central role in revenue accounting, cash activity, and fund-based reconciliations while helping maintain accurate financial records and compliance with nonprofit accounting standards. The ideal candidate will bring strong experience in general ledger work, month-end close, journal entries, and account reconciliation, along with the ability to manage donor-related transactions with precision.

Responsibilities:
• Oversee the review of incoming contribution and revenue activity from donor management records to confirm accuracy, correct fund assignment, and adherence to donor restrictions before recording in the accounting system.
• Record approved financial transactions promptly in the general ledger and maintain accurate supporting documentation for each entry.
• Partner with internal teams to complete monthly reconciliations between fundraising and accounting platforms, research variances, and prepare journal entries for review and resolution.
• Administer deposit activity by processing checks through remote deposit tools, handling in-person deposits when needed, and matching daily receipts to contribution reports.
• Prepare daily cash reporting to support visibility into liquidity and ensure all cash handling procedures follow established internal control standards.
• Coordinate the receipt and accounting of stock contributions, maintain detailed transfer records, and communicate activity quickly to relevant stakeholders for timely acknowledgment and reporting.
• Complete monthly reconciliations for bank and investment accounts, including restricted and endowment-related balances, within established close deadlines.
• Analyze general ledger accounts, investigate outstanding reconciling items, and maintain organized electronic files in accordance with finance documentation policies.
• Support the monthly close process by producing trial balance information, performing balance sheet and income statement analysis, and explaining notable variances.
• Assist with audit preparation, remittance tracking, and other assigned budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting activities.

Qualifications:

• 3+ years of accounting experience, preferably in a nonprofit or fund accounting environment.
• Hands-on experience with month-end close activities, including journal entries, general ledger maintenance, and financial account analysis.
• Strong background in account reconciliation and bank reconciliations across multiple accounts and funding sources.
• Knowledge of revenue recognition principles and the proper treatment of restricted and unrestricted funds.
• Ability to manage cash receipts, deposits, and related controls with a high degree of accuracy and confidentiality.
• Experience supporting audits and preparing organized schedules and documentation for financial review.
• Proficiency in working with accounting systems and reconciling data from multiple financial or donor-related platforms.

Compensation

$31.66-$36.66 Hourly
