Position Summary:
The Senior Accountant manages daily financial records, leads month-end closes, and ensures compliance with GAAP standards. This role reviews general ledgers, prepares financial statements, and supports internal audits.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Performs general ledger accounting activities, including preparing and posting journal entries.
- Completes monthly, quarterly, and year-end closing processes accurately and on schedule.
- Prepares account reconciliations and investigates and resolves discrepancies.
- Maintains supporting schedules for balance sheet and income statement accounts.
- Assists in preparing monthly financial statements and internal management reports.
- Analyzes financial results and explains significant budget-to-actual and period-over-period variances.
- Reviews accounting transactions for accuracy, appropriate classification, and compliance with company policies.
- Supports accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and cash-management activities as needed.
- Assists with fixed-asset accounting, including additions, disposals, depreciation, and physical asset verification.
- Maintains accurate accounting records and supporting documentation.
- Identifies and corrects accounting errors and recommends improvements to prevent recurring issues.
- Helps with inventory accounting, cycle-count reconciliation, inventory valuation, and reserve analysis.
- Supports annual financial statement audits, tax preparation, insurance audits, and other external reviews.
- Assists with compliance related to sales tax, property tax, income tax, and other financial reporting requirements.
- Aids the annual budgeting and periodic forecasting processes.
- Prepares financial models and scenario analyses to support business decisions.
- Develops reports that provide greater visibility into revenue, gross margin, operating expenses, and profitability.
- Monitors performance against budgets and forecasts and communicates emerging risks or opportunities.
Skills and Abilities:
- Proficient in generally accepted accounting principles.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including experience analyzing complex data sets.
- Analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills.
- Ability to move between detailed accounting work and broader financial analysis.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting required.
- A minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible accounting experience.
- Experience in a manufacturing or distribution environment with exposure to an ERP system preferred.
- Certified Management Accountant or Certified Public Accountant a plus.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- None specifically associated with this position.
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
- Must be able to access various departments of a given location.
