Position Description
Employees in this classification provide support in an assigned research laboratory performing laboratory experiments and procedures. Assists with the development of new procedures and techniques to be utilized within the laboratory. Performs other functional duties such as maintenance of the laboratory and laboratory equipment and supplies. Work is performed under usual laboratory conditions. Some hazards maybe present due to use of ratioctive, cacinogenic or other potientially harmful substances. Assists in training and direction of subordinate personnel.

Major/Essential Functions
- Responsible for maintaining inventories of commonly used supplies.
- Assist P.I. in establishing the budget and monitoring spending.
- Help P.I, students, and other technical personnel in training new students, postdocs and other investigators in various scientific procedures; preparation of talks, grants and publications.
- Manage and maintain a breeding colony of genetically altered mice, including genotyping and records.
- Conduct daily animal inventory.
- Design & execute experiments (Western blot analysis, recombinant protein expression, immunofluorescence analysis, cell culture).
- Perform rat injections, tattooing, handling, breeding and dissection.
- Maintain a record of experiments in a laboratory notebook, including detailed methodology, calculations, data graphs, images of protein blots ("Westerns"), interpretations of data, and indications of errors or unexpected outcomes.
- Supervise lab support activities such as dishwashing, ordering, cleaning, autoclaving solutions and stuffing pipette tip boxes by student assistants and provide these services when student assistants are absent.
- Help maintain essential laboratory equipment (check -80° and -20° freezer temperatures) and record (animal use and breeding colony records, material safety data sheets, biohazardous materials, invoices from orders).
Required Qualifications
High School Diploma; college work in one of the sciences or education/experience to equal 2 years.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in biology, animal science, engineering, or related fields.
- Experience with conducting research in a biological field.
- Experience with tools and techniques in molecular biology, including pipetting, performing assays, Western blotting, and polymerase chain reaction (PCR).
- Experience in handling small animals (mice).
- Experience with operations on a Macintosh or Windows computer.
- Experience with an online purchasing system to order equipment, reagents, and supplies.
- Experience and/or knowledge with molecular biology and biochemistry.
