Controller | Onsite | Purcellville, VA | $160K-200K+bonus+equity
Are you a hands-on accounting leader who thrives in fast-paced, growth-oriented environments? We’re seeking a Controller to lead financial reporting, strengthen internal controls, and build scalable accounting processes for a multi-location, acquisition-driven platform.
This is a high-impact opportunity for a finance professional who combines technical accounting expertise, operational discipline, and strong leadership. You’ll serve as the CFO’s key partner in maintaining a clean monthly close, ensuring GAAP compliance, and creating the systems, controls, and workflows needed to support continued expansion.
Lead Financial Reporting & Close
- Own the monthly close process and calendar, ensuring timely, accurate, GAAP-compliant financial statements
- Oversee revenue recognition for project-based work, including percentage-of-completion accounting, WIP, and over/under billing
- Review journal entries, reconciliations, and financial analyses prepared by the accounting team
- Produce monthly financial statements and reporting packages for executive, board, and sponsor reporting
- Monitor job profitability and flag abnormal margin trends to operational leadership
Drive Treasury, Cash Flow & Lender Readiness
- Support banking relationships, cash reporting, and future credit facility reporting
- Prepare borrowing base and lender reporting documentation in partnership with the CFO
- Own short-term and 13-week cash flow forecasting
Strengthen Controls & Audit Readiness
- Design, implement, and maintain strong internal controls across receipts, disbursements, approvals, and reconciliations
- Lead the annual external audit and serve as the primary contact for auditors
- Maintain audit-ready documentation and ensure effective segregation of duties
Build Scalable Systems & Processes
- Own the chart of accounts and serve as lead administrator for the ERP system
- Improve accounting workflows through automation, including AP invoice automation and reporting tools
- Partner on integrations between accounting, CRM, and project management platforms
- Establish repeatable processes that support growth and improve accuracy
Support Acquisition Integration
- Assist with financial due diligence for acquisitions
- Lead post-acquisition accounting integration, including ERP migration, chart of accounts alignment, and control implementation
- Oversee onboarding of payroll, vendors, receivables, payables, fixed assets, and WIP balances
- Track working capital activity related to deal adjustments
Lead the Accounting Team
- Manage and develop a team that includes corporate accounting, billing/AR, and accounting operations support
- Review team output, provide coaching, and build accountability
- Help recruit and scale the accounting function as the business grows
- Oversee outsourced accounting relationships and support transition of work in-house where appropriate
Qualifications:
- CPA or equivalent (i.e. ACCA)
- 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 2 years in a Controller or senior accounting leadership role
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, internal controls, audit management, and financial reporting
- Experience in construction, restoration, or project-based services preferred
- Hands-on experience with percentage-of-completion revenue recognition in a multi-location environment preferred
- Experience in a private equity-backed, acquisitive, or high-growth environment is highly valued
- Familiarity with Sage Intacct or similar ERP systems; experience with workflow automation and systems integration is a plus
- Proven track record leading teams, improving processes, and supporting ERP or acquisition integration initiatives
- Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills
- Ability to work onsite in Purcellville, VA with occasional travel as needed
