Controller
Responsibilities:
• Lead day-to-day oversight of accounting, accounts payable, and accounts receivable activities while coaching staff and providing operational guidance.
• Examine payroll support files, approve related reconciliations, and authorize journal entries to maintain accurate financial records.
• Monitor bank activity by posting transactions, tracking cleared checks, resolving outstanding items, and approving completed bank reconciliations.
• Review purchase orders for policy compliance, confirm appropriate general ledger coding, and support adherence to internal purchasing standards.
• Manage liquidity by tracking cash flow, preparing projections, and coordinating funding movements such as line of credit or endowment withdrawals when needed.
• Approve monthly financial statements and prepare written analysis that explains budget-to-actual variances and key financial trends for leadership review.
• Perform and oversee reconciliations for pledges, deferred revenue, prepaid balances, fundraising platforms, payment systems, petty cash, and other assigned accounts to ensure consistency across records.
• Verify cash receipts, post donation activity, prepare batches from online giving reports, and coordinate selected invoice coding and payment processing tasks.
• Assign and maintain project coding for staff and collaborate across departments to support financial analysis, forecasting, and reporting accuracy.
Qualifications:
• Demonstrated experience in controller-level or senior accounting leadership within a non-profit environment.• Strong knowledge of financial reporting, general ledger management, account reconciliations, and month-end close processes.
• Experience overseeing payroll accounting activities, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and cash management functions.
• Familiarity with Blackbaud and related non-profit accounting systems.
• Ability to review supporting documentation carefully and maintain strong document control and records management practices.
• Proficiency in handling scanned files, compiled documentation, and detailed financial support materials with a high level of accuracy.
• Strong analytical skills with the ability to investigate variances, interpret financial data, and communicate findings clearly.
• Effective leadership and cross-functional collaboration skills, with the ability to mentor staff and uphold internal controls.
