Controller

We are looking for an experienced Controller to support a real estate and property organization in Lansing, Michigan. This is a Long-term Contract opportunity for a hands-on accounting leader who can supervise and review month-end reporting, improve cash flow visibility, and provide steady guidance to an established finance team. The position is best suited for someone with strong property management accounting expertise who is comfortable working in a predominantly onsite environment and partnering across multiple entities. You will play a key role in maintaining financial accuracy, supporting lender-related obligations, and helping the organization stay organized during budgeting and reporting cycles.

Responsibilities:

• Direct the month-end close process across a large portfolio of entities, ensuring financial reporting is timely, accurate, and scalable.

• Prepare and refine weekly cash flow forecasts with a strong focus on accrual-based accounting and forward-looking analysis.

• Review and approve monthly bank reconciliations while maintaining strong internal financial controls.

• Provide day-to-day leadership and support to the four person accounting staff.

• Oversee accounting activities tied to escrow balances, property taxes, and insurance-related transactions.

• Coordinate budgeting efforts and help organize financial plans across the portfolio during budget season.

• Manage draw requests and funding activity involving banks, grants, and other external financing sources.

• Support lender compliance requirements by preparing documentation, reviewing reporting obligations, and helping ensure deadlines are met.

• Evaluate monthly reporting processes for numerous entities and identify practical ways to improve efficiency and consistency.

• Partner with internal stakeholders and external advisors to review financial results and address complex real estate accounting matters.

Qualifications:

• Demonstrated experience serving in a Controller or senior accounting leadership role within real estate or property management environments.
• Strong background in month-end reporting, financial statement review, and accrual-based accounting practices.
• Proven ability to develop and analyze cash flow forecasts for multi-entity operations.
• Experience supervising accounting professionals and serving as a reliable resource for day-to-day problem solving.
• Familiarity with commercial, residential, or mixed property management accounting.
• Working knowledge of lender compliance, draw processes, and reporting tied to financed projects.
• Experience using RealPage or similar property management and accounting software.
• Ability to work 40 hours per week in a predominantly onsite arrangement in Lansing, Michigan.

Compensation

$50.00-$70.00 Hourly
