Sr. Accountant

Robert Half has partnered with a respected nonprofit organization in New Haven, CT to identify an experienced Senior Accountant for a contract assignment. This position offers an opportunity to contribute to an organization dedicated to serving the community while supporting key accounting and financial reporting functions. The ideal candidate will bring strong accounting expertise, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively in a mission-driven environment.

Responsibilities

• Maintain and reconcile general ledger accounts and ensure accuracy of financial records
• Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and supporting schedules
• Assist with month-end and year-end close processes
• Perform account reconciliations and investigate variances
• Support budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis activities
• Monitor grant expenditures and assist with grant reporting requirements
• Prepare journal entries and maintain supporting documentation
• Assist with audits and coordinate requests from external auditors
• Ensure compliance with nonprofit accounting standards, internal controls, and organizational policies
• Analyze financial data and provide recommendations to improve financial processes
• Support accounts payable, accounts receivable, and other accounting functions as needed
• Assist leadership with special projects and financial reporting requests

Qualifications:

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
• 5+ years of progressive accounting experience
• Strong understanding of GAAP and financial reporting principles
• Experience preparing account reconciliations, journal entries, and financial statements
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting software systems
• Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
• Strong written and verbal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous nonprofit accounting experience
• Experience with grant accounting and fund accounting
• CPA designation or CPA candidacy preferred
• Familiarity with nonprofit ERP or accounting systems
