Controller

Our client, a small organization in Princeton, New Jersey, is seeking an experienced Controller to lead day-to-day accounting and finance operations. This hybrid opportunity is ideal for a hands-on accounting leader who enjoys working in a collaborative, mission-driven environment and can oversee financial reporting, budgeting, compliance, and process improvements.

The Controller will play a key role in managing the company’s financial health, maintaining accurate records, and supporting leadership with reporting and analysis. This position requires strong QuickBooks experience, and nonprofit accounting experience is highly preferred.

Key Responsibilities

• Oversee all accounting operations, including general ledger, month-end close, account reconciliations, and financial statement preparation
• Manage budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow reporting
• Ensure compliance with applicable accounting standards, internal controls, and regulatory requirements
• Prepare and present monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports to leadership
• Coordinate audits and support tax filing requirements
• Maintain and improve accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls
• Supervise accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and other daily accounting functions
• Partner with leadership on financial planning and operational decision-making
• Monitor grant tracking, fund accounting, and restricted funds, if applicable

Qualifications:

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
• 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including leadership responsibilities
• Prior experience in a Controller or senior-level accounting role
• Required: Strong proficiency in QuickBooks
• Highly preferred: Nonprofit accounting experience
• Strong knowledge of financial reporting, budgeting, and internal controls
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a small company environment
• Excellent communication and organizational skills
• CPA or CPA-track is a plus
