VA Claims Advocate/Paralegal
Our client, a mission driven non-profit, is seeking a VA Claims Advocate/Paralegal to support veterans and their family members as they pursue disability compensation and other available benefits. This opportunity is well suited for someone who brings compassion, sound judgment, and strong organizational skills to client advocacy work.
Location: Johnston, RI
Schedule: If candidate lives close to Johnston, RI, it will be 1 or 2 days in office. If candidate lives further away, it is fully REMOTE.
Salary: $65,000 - $75,000 (depending on experience)
Responsibilities:
- Conduct intake screenings and interviews with veterans, family members, employers, and other witnesses.
- Review client files, military records, medical records, VA decisions, and other evidence.
- Identify potential claims, legal theories, missing evidence, and case-development needs.
- Draft claims, appeals, legal arguments, motions, client statements, and witness declarations.
- Obtain medical, military, employment, and other records necessary to support clients’ claims.
- Conduct legal and factual research involving VA regulations, policies, procedures, and relevant case law.
- Communicate regularly with clients, government agencies, medical providers, and other third parties.
- Assist attorneys and senior advocates with case development and appellate work.
- Maintain accurate electronic case files, correspondence, deadlines, and case updates.
- Prioritize assignments and meet internal and external deadlines.
- Collaborate with attorneys, claims advocates, client coordinators, and other team members.
- Attend required training and assist with onboarding or training new team members as needed.
- Perform additional case-related and administrative duties as assigned.

- CANDIDATE NEEDS TO HAVE VA ACCREDITATION (VA accreditation is the official authorization granted by the Department of Veterans Affairs to representatives, agents, and attorneys to assist claimants in the preparation, presentation, and prosecution of VA benefits claims)
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Bachelor’s degree, paralegal certificate, or related experience preferred.
- Previous experience in a legal, claims, case-management, veterans’ services, healthcare, or client-service role preferred.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong organization, research, writing, interviewing, and analytical skills.
- Ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines.
- Strong attention to detail, accountability, professionalism, and sound judgment.
- Ability to take direction, incorporate feedback, and work independently.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Adobe Acrobat, and standard office technology.

Compensation
