Employees in this position are responsible for augmenting a supervising physician's data gathering abilities to reach decisions and institute patient care plans. Provides health care services to patients under direction and responsibility of a Physician.

Occasional Duties
Performs as a responsible and collaborative team member and adheres to institutional standards of ethics and professional conduct. Comes on time for appointments and meetings. Considers work space and time of other staff. Maintains confidences regarding personal lives of colleagues. Maintains a responsible, task oriented demeanor on the job. Communicates with others in a respectful, courteous manner. Adheres to dress code. Submits accurate and prompt Web leave reporting.
Assesses patients to determine general mental health and prescribes treatment with treatment teams' input and administers medication or other treatment as needed. Assesses patients for common forensic issues such civil commitment, decisional capacity, compelled medication, etc., and participates in their respective legal processes. Takes regional call to ensure there is continuous psychiatric coverage within the TTUHSC regions. Refers patients to medical specialist or practitioner for specialized treatment.
Required Qualifications
Graduation from a Physician Assistant's training program approved by the Council on Allied Health Education Accreditation of the American Medical Association. Current Physician Assistant license in the State of Texas or ability to transfer license to Texas. Certification as a Physician Assistant as evidenced by passing the examinations given by the National Commission on the Certification of Physician Assistants. OR Graduation from an accredited school of nursing as a nurse practitioner from an approved certification program recognized by Texas Board of Nursing. Current R.N. license as approved by the Texas Board of Nursing or ability to transfer license to Texas. Certification as a Nurse Practitioner from an approved certification program as recognized by Texas Board of Nursing or ability to transfer certification to Texas.

Major/Essential Functions
Clinical Assessment & Management
- Conducts thorough clinical interviews and assessments with inmates, ensuring documentation is completed daily.
- Provides outpatient mental health care for inmates with severe mental illness or those considered high-risk.
- Writes clinical assessments based on sound, balanced judgment.
- Manages referrals to medical and mental health providers as needed.
- Facilitates and documents releases from Crisis Development Observation (CDO), Mental Health Observation (MHO), and Behavioral Health Follow-up (BHF) referrals.
- Identifies and manages risks related to inmate mental health during all interactions.
- Reports threats or concerns (e.g., Offender Protection Investigations or safety threats) to security staff per Safe Prisons Plan.
- Prioritizes tasks with a focus on risk management.
- Maintains accurate inmate/patient reminders and records.
- Completes all required documentation by close of business each day.
- Adheres to all TDCJ Health Services, ACA, TTUHSC, and Outpatient Behavioral Health guidelines.
- Meets or exceeds monthly productivity goals set by the Behavioral Health Management Team.
- Responds professionally to supervision, accepting and applying feedback constructively.
- Keeps supervisors informed of relevant clinical and administrative issues.
- Attends trainings and reads relevant materials to enhance clinical skills.
- Uses professional development funds for licensure renewal and continuing education.
