Juris Doctorate - Unlicensed

We are looking for a mission-driven law graduate to join a respected non-profit organization serving tenants in Bronx, New York. In this role, you will help protect housing stability for low-income residents by providing legal advocacy in eviction-related matters and related proceedings. This opportunity is ideal for someone with strong academic preparation, sound judgment, and a genuine commitment to public interest work. You will work directly with clients and community stakeholders to help secure meaningful legal outcomes.

Responsibilities:
• Represent tenants in eviction and related housing matters referred through right-to-counsel and other community-based channels.
• Advocate for clients in housing court, appellate venues, administrative hearings, and other proceedings connected to tenancy and housing benefits.
• Advise clients on legal options, case strategy, and potential defenses while maintaining clear and consistent communication throughout each matter.
• Prepare legal documents, conduct research, manage discovery, question witnesses, and present arguments during conferences, hearings, and trials.
• Negotiate with opposing counsel and engage with public agencies or outside service providers to advance clients’ interests.
• Build working knowledge of housing law, subsidy programs, and public benefits rules to support effective case outcomes.
• Participate in intake activities, assess new matters, and help ensure eligible tenants receive timely legal assistance.
• Support community education and outreach efforts designed to inform residents about housing rights and available legal resources.

Qualifications:

• Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school.
• Eligibility to practice under applicable rules as a recent law graduate, bar exam candidate, newly admitted attorney, or recent New York bar passer.
• Demonstrated dedication to public service, equity, and advocacy in low-income communities and communities of color.
• Strong legal writing, research, analytical, and oral advocacy abilities.
• Ability to communicate effectively with people from varied cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
• Solid organizational and time-management skills with the capacity to handle a high-volume, fast-moving caseload.
• Interest in housing justice, tenant advocacy, and community-centered legal representation.

Compensation

$80,000.00-$86,000.00 Yearly
