Position Description

Job Summary:

The Yard Person / Plant Operator performs a combination of plant operations, heavy equipment operation, haul truck operation, routine plant maintenance, and general ground person duties to support safe and efficient quarry production. This position operates and monitors crushing, screening, conveying, and material-handling equipment; operates mobile equipment; performs inspections, housekeeping, and hands-on maintenance work; manages material flow; and supports customer and hauling operations.


The role requires flexibility to perform both equipment-based and manual labor tasks throughout the quarry as operational needs dictate, including maintenance and repair activities on crushers, screens, conveyors, feeders, and associated processing equipment.


Essential Functions:

1. Safety Always Wins. Safely operate quarry processing equipmentincluding crushers, screens, conveyors, feeders, and material-handling systemsas well as haul trucks, loaders, excavators, and other mobile equipment. Follow all site safety requirements, including lockout/tagout procedures.

2. Mastery. Operate, monitor, and adjust crushing, screening, conveying, and material-handling processes; transport raw materials, aggregates, and overburden; and manage material flow to support safe, efficient production and product quality.

3. Dedication. Perform preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, repairs, and equipment change-outs on crushers, screens, conveyors, feeders, chutes, pumps, and related plant equipment. Duties may include lubrication, cleaning, clearing material buildup, changing screen media, replacing wear parts, belts, rollers, idlers, guards, and other components, and assisting with mechanical repairs as trained and assigned.

4. Honesty and Truth. Conduct equipment inspections, workplace examinations, and operational checks; promptly report hazards, abnormal operating conditions, equipment deficiencies, incidents, near misses, quality concerns, and maintenance needs; and complete required documentation accurately.

5. Ownership and Caring. Perform ground person duties, housekeeping, cleanup, hand labor, material removal, and stockpile maintenance to maintain safe, orderly, and productive plant and yard areas.

6. Committed to Serve. Load customer and company vehicles accurately and safely, assist customers, vendors, and drivers, and support safe traffic flow and efficient material movement throughout the quarry and yard.

7. Compulsive tinkering. Identify and support practical improvements to safety, equipment reliability, preventive maintenance practices, uptime, productivity, and operational effectiveness.

8. Respect and engage. Communicate clearly and work collaboratively with operations and maintenance team members to prioritize and complete scheduled and unscheduled work safely, while adapting to changing production and maintenance needs.

Position Requirements

Requirements, Education and Experience:

  1. Two (2) or more years of experience in a quarry, mining, aggregate, industrial plant, heavy-equipment, construction, or similar production environment, including demonstrated mechanical aptitude and the ability to safely troubleshoot, maintain, and repair industrial or heavy equipment; required.
  2. Demonstrated welding and fabrication skills, including the safe use of welding, cutting, grinding, and related shop tools to repair or fabricate equipment components; required.
  3. Experience performing preventive maintenance and repairs on crushers, screens, conveyors, feeders, pumps, and other material-processing equipment; required.
  4. Experience safely operating mobile equipment, such as loaders, haul trucks, and excavators; required.
  5. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions, complete inspection and maintenance documentation, and promptly communicate equipment concerns, hazards, and repair needs; required.
  6. High school diploma or GED; required.
  7. Must have a valid drivers license
  8. Authorized to work in the U.S.

Travel:

Position may require up to 5% travel by personal vehicle to offices throughout the region as well as the state of New York, and New England based on the needs of the business.


Work Environment/Physical Demands:

Medium work involving exertion of up to 50 pounds occasionally, up to 25 pounds frequently, and up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects, with occasional team lifting or mechanical assistance required for heavier materials and equipment components.


Regularly stand, walk, climb, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, perform manual labor, and operate heavy equipment while working on uneven terrain and around moving machinery.

Work outdoors in varying weather conditions and regularly tolerate exposure to dust, noise, vibration, and moving mechanical equipment.
