Principal Accountant

We are looking for an experienced Principal Accountant to support complex accounting operations and financial reporting activities for a public-sector environment in Downey, California. This Long-term Contract opportunity is ideal for an organized candidate who can manage core accounting functions, interpret regulatory requirements, and provide reliable financial analysis to support sound decision-making. The role requires strong technical accounting knowledge, accuracy in period-end processes, and the ability to work effectively with financial systems, internal stakeholders, and operational teams.

Responsibilities:
• Lead month-end close activities, ensuring timely completion of journal entries, reconciliations, and supporting schedules.
• Maintain the general ledger and review accounting transactions for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with applicable governmental standards.
• Prepare and analyze account reconciliations, investigate discrepancies, and resolve outstanding items in a timely manner.
• Perform bank reconciliations and monitor cash-related activity to maintain accurate financial records.
• Research accounting issues and apply federal, state, and local regulations to financial procedures, reporting, and records management.
• Develop financial reports, summaries, and analytical findings that support budgeting, forecasting, and operational decision-making.
• Use financial systems and related technology tools to manage data, improve reporting accuracy, and support accounting operations.
• Collaborate with internal departments and stakeholders to address accounting questions, strengthen controls, and maintain effective working relationships.

Qualifications:

• Minimum of 3 years of accounting experience, including responsibility for month-end close and general ledger activities.
• Demonstrated knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and their application within governmental or public-sector accounting environments.
• Hands-on experience preparing journal entries, account reconciliations, and bank reconciliations with a high degree of accuracy.
• Strong ability to interpret financial data, evaluate issues critically, and make sound accounting decisions.
• Familiarity with federal, state, and local regulations affecting accounting procedures, financial records, and reporting practices.
• Proficiency with accounting software, automated financial systems, and standard office technology.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across teams and support customer-focused service.
• Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.

Compensation

$40.00-$45.00 Hourly
