Description

The Associate Dean for Academic Affairs (ADAA) serves as the chief academic officer of the School of Nursing and a strategic partner to the Dean. This senior executive leadership role provides comprehensive oversight of academic programs, including curriculum, assessment, accreditation, and academic operations across undergraduate and graduate education. The ADAA leads continuous quality improvement efforts, ensures compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards, and advances innovative academic and community partnerships aligned with the School’s mission and strategic priorities.

The Associate Dean is a member of the School of Nursing Leadership Team and collaborates closely with the Dean, Associate Dean for Student Affairs and Student Services, Assistant Deans, Chairs, Program Directors, Coordinators, and university leadership. This is a 12-month fiscal appointment with optional teaching responsibilities, as determined by the Dean. Undergoes administrative review after the second year and every three years thereafter, incorporating faculty feedback.

Academic Leadership & Curriculum Oversight

• Provides strategic leadership and oversight of all undergraduate and graduate curricula, ensuring academic rigor, innovation, and alignment with professional standards.

• Leads School of Nursing curriculum development, evaluation, and revision in collaboration with faculty governance structures.

• Leads the School of Nursing in innovative programmatic, pedagogical, and curricular initiatives, including the use of AI.

• Oversees systematic program assessment processes, including student learning outcomes, program effectiveness, and continuous quality improvement.

• In collaboration with the Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Programs, tracks progress of direct entry students with pre-nursing courses and works with other SIUE units to ensure student success and progression.

• Serves as ex-officio member of the Data Assessment Committee.

Assessment, Accreditation, and Compliance

• Directs all accreditation activities, including self-studies, reports, and site visit preparation for accrediting bodies such as Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).

• Ensures compliance with all regulatory and reporting requirements, including those related to the National Council for State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements and Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation.

• Leads institutional and programmatic assessment initiatives, ensuring data-driven decision-making and accountability.

Academic Operations & Faculty Support

• Oversees course scheduling and academic scheduling components in collaboration with Program Directors/ Department Chairs and SIUE academic scheduling.

• Provides leadership for academic policies and procedures related to faculty roles, workload, course evaluations, and performance expectations.

• Serves as liaison with the Office of the Provost and General Counsel on academic and faculty-related matters.

• In collaboration with Assistant Deans and Chairs, oversees systems for tracking faculty compliance and credentialing requirements.

• Oversees updates and revisions of the faculty handbook annually.

Supervision and Leadership

• Supervises and evaluates:

o Director of Instructional Design

o Director of Simulation/Clinical Learning Center

o Assigned academic support staff

o Director of Assessment

• Provides strategic direction for simulation, clinical education infrastructure, instructional innovation, including online and hybrid learning modalities, and assessment initiatives.

• Provides collaborative and visionary leadership that promotes collegiality and relationship building within the School of Nursing and across the university and clinical partner community. Effectively leads groups, facilitates teamwork and decision-making, and fosters a culture of respect, inclusion, accountability, and continuous improvement. Demonstrates strong interpersonal and conflict-resolution skills, addressing challenges with professionalism, diplomacy, and a solutions-oriented approach while maintaining positive and productive working relationships.

Strategic Partnerships

• Oversees strategic alignment of corporate and academic partnership agreements that support program growth and workforce development.

• Facilitates partnerships with healthcare systems and academic institutions.

• Represents the School in university, community, and professional settings at local, state, and national levels.

• Creates interprofessional education opportunities for nursing students with other SIUE healthcare units and other departments, e.g. engineering, social work, etc.

Budgetary and Strategic Planning

• Collaborates with the Dean on budget planning, resource allocation, and financial sustainability related to academic programs.

• Contributes to strategic planning and implementation of School priorities, including growth, innovation, and academic excellence.

Scholarship and Service

• Maintains an active program of scholarship consistent with faculty rank.

• Participates in professional organizations and contributes to the advancement of nursing education and practice.

Other Responsibilities

• Serves on the School of Nursing Leadership Team.

• Coordinates internal and external requests for faculty participation in research.

• Undertakes special projects and initiatives as assigned by the Dean.

Qualifications

• Earned PhD, DNP, or equivalent doctoral degree (preferably in nursing).

• Eligible for faculty appointment at the tenured rank of Associate Professor or higher.

• Demonstrated experience in academic leadership within higher education.

• Proven expertise in curriculum development, program assessment, and accreditation processes.

• Established record of scholarship and service.

• Teaching experience in nursing education.

• Eligible for unencumbered RN licensure in Illinois and Missouri.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience leading accreditation processes with bodies such as Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.

• Demonstrated success in managing large-scale academic operations or multi-program portfolios.

• Experience with instructional design, online education, and simulation-based learning.

• Strong record of building academic-practice partnerships and external collaborations.
