Payroll Supervisor

Robert Half Management Resources is seeking a hands-on Payroll Supervisor to support our non-profit client in Los Angeles on an onsite engagement expected to last 2+ months. This consultant will oversee day-to-day payroll operations and help ensure accurate, timely payroll processing. The role will also support payroll compliance, reporting, tax filings, employee inquiries, and payroll staff, while partnering closely with Human Resources, Total Rewards, and Finance.

Responsibilities:

• Direct semi-monthly payroll processing for a large employee population, reviewing calculations and outputs to ensure accuracy and timely completion.

• Monitor adherence to federal, state, and local wage and hour requirements, with particular attention to California payroll standards and tax obligations.

• Collaborate with HR, Total Rewards, and Finance teams to investigate discrepancies, reconcile records, and resolve payroll-related issues efficiently.

• Respond to employee questions regarding pay, deductions, taxes, and other payroll matters, providing clear guidance and timely follow-up.

• Supervise and support payroll team members in daily operations, helping prioritize work and maintain service quality.

• Evaluate payroll workflows and introduce practical improvements that strengthen efficiency, consistency, and data accuracy.

• Prepare and review payroll reports, filings, and supporting documentation to help maintain compliance and reporting integrity.

• Utilize payroll systems (ADP Workforce Now) and spreadsheet tools to analyze payroll data, track exceptions, and support operational decision-making.

Qualifications:

• At least 4 years of payroll experience, including lead or supervisory responsibility.
• Strong understanding of payroll compliance, tax reporting, and California payroll practices.
• Experience processing full-cycle payroll for organizations with more than 500 employees.
• Proficiency with ADP Workforce Now and advanced Excel capabilities.
• Ability to work effectively in a union payroll environment is strongly preferred.
• Strong analytical, organizational, and customer service skills.
• CPP certification, Spanish language skills, and experience in nonprofit or healthcare settings are considered advantageous.

Compensation

$48.00-$55.00 Hourly
