Department Overview

The OHSU Cancer Registry collects detailed information about the diagnosis, treatment and survival of cancer patients at OHSU. The registry serves as a resource to OSU, the Knight Cancer Institute and other facilities within the OHSU Knight Cancer Network. With over 250 discretely coded data fields used to describe each instance of cancer, registry data can be put to use improving cancer care and public health in numerous ways. The registry also supports the OHSU Cancer Committee in all its efforts to maintain accreditation with the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons, including data quality control, compliance with commission standards, staffing assistance for registry operations and data mining. As required by state law and the standards of the Commission on Cancer, the registry reports its data to the Oregon State Cancer Registry and the National Cancer Database for use in epidemiologic studies.

 

The Tumor Registrar is responsible for case finding, registering, abstracting, staging & performing patient follow-up functions on all patients seen at FACILITY NAME for the diagnosis and/or treatment of cancer. The Tumor Registrar is also responsible for other cancer program-related activities such as data requests, quality control & support to the Cancer Committee.

Function/Duties of Position
  • Abstract relevant cases into the cancer registry database. Abstract includes data collection such as: patient demographics, diagnostic, treatment, follow-up, and other pertinent data. Abstracts are to be completed no more than 4 months from date of first contact.
  • Complete patient follow-up on all registered cases. Follow-up includes data collection such as: vital status, disease status, additional treatment, and source of continuing follow-up.
  • Attend staff meetings and quality assurance meetings. May be asked to attend other meetings
  • Participate in quality improvement projects
  • Other required duties include: participation in special study requests or assistance with case-finding and registering patients to the cancer registry database.

Required Qualifications
  • Two years of hospital-based tumor registry experience or an Associate’s degree in
  • Medical Record Technology from an accredited program;  OR
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Current credential of CTR (Certified Tumor Registrar) or CTR-eligible is required for cancer registry staff who perform case abstraction.
  • Beginning 1/1/2012, all cancer registry staff who perform case abstracting at a CoC accredited program must either hold a current CTR credential or for a non credentialed person, they must pass the CTR examination by January 2015.  During this time frame, a non credentialed abstractor may perform abstracting under the supervision of a CTR. Anyone hired after 1/1/2012 to perform abstracting must pass the CTR exam within 3 years of the hire date.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Anatomy & physiology
  • Medical terminology
  • Knowledge of cancer types including classification by morphology code and cancer staging schemes
  • Knowledge of and ability to maintain ACoS cancer registry requirements
  • Ability to complete an average of 4 abstracts in an 8-hour day
  • Experience with Oncology Cancer Registry Database System
  • Experience with EPIC Electronic Medical Record
  • Membership in OCRA (Oregon Cancer Registry Association).
  • If CTR, membership in NCRA (National Cancer Registrars Association).
