Staff Accountant

We are looking for a detail-oriented Staff Accountant to support the financial operations of a university in Biddeford, Maine. This contract opportunity with permanent potential is ideal for someone with a solid accounting foundation who is comfortable handling day-to-day financial activity, maintaining accurate records, and contributing to a collaborative team environment. The person in this role will work across a range of accounting tasks, from recording transactions to supporting cash activity and payment processing. Strong attention to detail, a willingness to learn, and confidence working with debits and credits will be important for success.

Responsibilities:
• Prepare and enter journal entries to ensure university financial activity is recorded accurately and on time.
• Input accounting data into the Banner system and verify transaction details for completeness and accuracy.
• Record, post, and reconcile daily financial transactions within the general ledger.
• Process miscellaneous check activity and support proper documentation for payments.
• Assist with cash deposit handling and maintain accurate records of funds received.
• Support wire transfer activity by preparing entries and tracking related accounting documentation.
• Contribute to broader bookkeeping and staff accounting duties beyond standard journal entry work.
• Collaborate with team members on routine accounting tasks and help maintain organized financial records.

Qualifications:

• Prior experience in bookkeeping, staff accounting, or a similar accounting support role.
• Working knowledge of journal entries, general ledger activity, and daily transaction processing.
• Understanding of core accounting principles, including debits and credits.
• Ability to process financial data accurately with strong attention to detail.
• Comfortable learning new systems, processes, and university-specific accounting procedures.
• Team-oriented approach with the ability to work effectively with others.
• Experience handling checks, cash deposits, or related payment activity is preferred.

Compensation

$23.75-$27.50 Hourly
