Paralegal
We are looking for a detail-oriented Paralegal to support civil litigation matters in San Mateo, California. This role is well suited for someone who can manage discovery, court filings, scheduling, and trial preparation while keeping deadlines and documentation organized. The ideal candidate brings strong knowledge of California litigation procedures, confidence working with case management and billing systems, and the ability to coordinate effectively with attorneys, clients, experts, and outside vendors.
Responsibilities:
• Track billable time accurately and maintain organized billing records using legal billing platforms.
• Draft, prepare, and file case management statements and other court-related documents in accordance with state and federal filing requirements.
• Handle discovery support by preparing admissions, interrogatories, inspection demands, deposition notices, and related service documents while monitoring statutory deadlines under California rules.
• Coordinate depositions by scheduling participants and arranging court reporters, interpreters, and other required logistics.
• Obtain and manage subpoenaed records, including medical, employment, and financial documentation, and organize materials for attorney review.
• Examine incoming discovery materials such as deposition transcripts, records, document productions, and written responses, then index and summarize key information.
• Assist with discovery responses by gathering client information, preparing verifications, finalizing response packages, and ensuring timely service.
• Support expert witness and motion practice by helping retain experts, assembling case materials, drafting initial motion documents, tracking hearing-related deadlines, and monitoring tentative rulings.
• Contribute to trial and post-trial preparation by organizing binders, coordinating witnesses and vendors, preparing jury-related materials, and assisting with memoranda of costs after trial.
Qualifications:
• 2+ years of experience in a paralegal or legal assistant capacity within civil litigation; candidates with substantial legal secretary experience are also encouraged to apply.• Certificate or degree in paralegal studies, legal studies, or a related accredited program.
• Practical knowledge of California Discovery Statutes, including response timelines, service requirements, and litigation deadlines.
• Experience with electronic filing in state and federal courts and familiarity with court filings, calendaring, and case tracking.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, and Planner.
• Working knowledge of Clio Manage, Clio Grow, Gavel, or comparable case management software, along with Adobe Acrobat.
• Experience using legal billing software; familiarity with litigation insurance billing codes is helpful.
• Ability to work with automated legal forms and jury instruction tools such as HotDocs, Lexis automated forms, or similar platforms.
Compensation
