The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery is recruiting for a Research Assistant to assist the research being conducted in the University of Pittsburgh Concussion Research Lab. This position supports the research of multiple investigators and includes recruiting, screening and consenting research participants, data entry using Redcap, conducting concussion-specific assessments including neurocognitive, vestibular, ocular, symptoms and psychological health. After training the research assistant is expected to perform these tasks with minimal supervision. Candidate should have exceptional interpersonal and communication skills. Candidate must be able to collaborate as part of a team as well as work independently. This position requires a Bachelor’s degree in biological science, kinesiology, psychology or related field.


Job Summary

Assists with and adheres to Institutional Review Board (IRB) renewal, modification, and approved protocols. Recruits research subjects and conducts interviews and research assessments.


Essential Functions

This position will require on site work at the University of Pittsburgh Concussion Research Lab.

Recruits, screens, enrolls and consents research participants. Follow-up with study participants to schedule appointments and maintain study retention.

Conducts study visits, administers study assessments, scores assessments and monitors participants, provides compensation.

Obtain basic vitals of blood pressure, heart rate, temperature.

Use various research devices in the lab (pupillometer, skin response, driving simulator, exercise equipment, etc.)

Previous experience with phlebotomy preferred.

Enters data to Redcap and other databases.

Provides regular updates to Lab Manager and Principal Investigators.

Attend relevant meetings.


Physical Effort

The candidate must be able to walk. The facility is in a distributed environment, and to perform the concussion research protocols, the incumbent must be able to move around freely. The incumbent must be able to guide patients from the waiting area to the study center, which will require walking from various locations.
