Position Summary
The Medical Receptionist is part of a small team of front desk staff who support the day-to-day customer service, scheduling, and clerical functions of two clinics in SHAC: Health Services and Counseling Services. This position provides information about a wide range of medical and counseling services such as urgent care, routine primary care, diagnostic work such as labs or x-ray, STI clinics, acupuncture, telehealth and telemental healthcare, individual and group therapy, crisis counseling, and testing for learning disabilities and ADHD. Because of the number of services that SHAC provides and the variety of needs that arise, this position requires a high degree of accuracy, multi-tasking, and problem-solving to ensure the best student experience.

The Medical Receptionist competently assists students in a cheerful and helpful manner prior to and during their appointments, including checking-in patients, navigating and completing clinic forms, verifying and entering health insurance information, and scheduling follow up visits. The Medical Receptionist uses a scheduling prioritization matrix, asking follow up questions that often involve personal or sensitive information, in order to problem solve and schedule medical and counseling appointments appropriately. This position acts as a liaison between students and SHAC providers to ensure that students are receiving the care they need. The Medical Receptionist interacts on a daily basis with a large, multidisciplinary clinical team, which includes physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, acupuncturists, psychologists, social workers, psychiatrists, and master’s level interns and post-doc residents. The Medical Receptionist determines and clarifies SHAC eligibility rules prior to scheduling an appointment, conducts data entry including entering pronouns and preferred names for students, and assists students, parents, and faculty/staff with questions about the PSU immunization requirement for measles and covid-19 via phone, email, or in person. Accuracy, confidentiality, collegiality, calm under pressure, and excellent customer service are the highest priority in this position.

In this front facing position, the Medical Receptionist is also responsible for creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for the diverse student body at PSU, as well as faculty/staff and the larger PSU community. Cultural competency and patient confidentiality are highly regarded in this challenging position.

SHAC is currently hiring for two Medical Receptionist positions, one with a start date of September 1st, 2026 and one with a start date of September 16, 20026.
