A laboratory at Harvard Medical School/HHMI studying the development and degeneration of the central nervous system, with an emphasis on the eye, seeks a Research Assistant II to support studies focused on ocular gene therapy. Under general supervision, the incumbent will perform a variety of laboratory research activities using established protocols and procedures. The position involves conducting laboratory experiments, collecting and analyzing research data, maintaining laboratory records, and assisting with the development and optimization of experimental techniques related to ocular gene therapy and visual system research.

Typical Duties

• Perform laboratory experiments utilizing established techniques and procedures in support of ocular gene therapy research.
• Conduct viral injections in mice and perform injections and dissections of chick embryos according to established protocols.
• Assist with small animal procedures, behavioral testing, tissue processing, immunohistochemistry, microscopy, and related experimental techniques.
• Perform visual function assays, including electroretinography (ERG) and optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging, and assist with data collection and analysis.
• Conduct high-content imaging studies and quantitative analysis of cells labeled by immunohistochemistry and RNA in situ hybridization.
• Collect, process, organize, and summarize experimental data using scientific, statistical, and spreadsheet software applications.
• Maintain accurate laboratory records and prepare summaries of experimental findings for review by the Principal Investigator and senior laboratory personnel.
• Assist in the development, refinement, and troubleshooting of laboratory protocols and experimental procedures.
• Maintain laboratory equipment and supplies, including routine maintenance, cleaning, inventory management, and ordering of laboratory materials.
• Assist in training students and other laboratory personnel in established laboratory techniques and procedures as appropriate.
• Perform other laboratory research activities and related duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications:

• College background or equivalent work experience, preferably in neuroscience, biology, molecular biology, or a related field.
• One to two years of related laboratory experience; relevant coursework and research experience may count toward experience requirements.

• Term: This is a one-year term position from the date of hire, with the possibility of extension, contingent upon work performance and continued funding to support the position.
• Standard Hours/Schedule: 35 hrs. per week | Monday - Friday | 9:00 am - 5:00 pm
