Senior Medical Billing Specialist

Job Summary

Our client is looking for a temp to hire Team Lead for Billing, Financial & Insurance Assistance, and Revenue Cycle Oversight. This role is responsible for managing critical aspects of the revenue cycle, including internal and outsourced billing operations as well as financial and insurance assistance services. This is an onsite role, full time hours, temp to perm with an annual salary range $65-80k.


The Team Lead will act as the organization’s primary internal contact for oversight of the outsourced billing vendor and internal patient billing functions, including self-pay and sliding fee accounts. This position ensures patients receive timely access to insurance enrollment and financial assistance while maintaining strong internal controls, accurate billing practices, vendor accountability, and compliance with healthcare billing and payer regulations.


Key Responsibilities

 

Revenue Cycle Oversight

  • Serve as the main liaison between our client and outsourced billing vendors.
  • Monitor revenue cycle performance, including claim submission timeliness, denial trends, accounts receivable aging, and collections.
  • Review billing and financial reports for discrepancies, trends, and compliance issues.
  • Coordinate issue escalation, resolution, and corrective actions with vendors and internal teams.
  • Partner with Accounting, Front Desk, and Clinical leadership to support accurate and compliant revenue capture workflows.
  • Ensure insurance payments are posted and reconciled promptly according to policy.
  • Assist with audits, payer reviews, and compliance activities related to billing and revenue cycle operations.

Internal Billing Oversight

  • Oversee billing for self-pay, sliding fee, and other non-insurance patient accounts.
  • Ensure accurate patient statements, payment posting, adjustments, and account follow-up.
  • Monitor self-pay balances, payment plans, and collections efforts while supporting patient access and financial responsibility.
  • Work closely with the Financial & Insurance Assistance team, Front Desk, and Accounting to align eligibility decisions with patient billing.
  • Identify trends and recommend improvements in self-pay billing processes.
  • Ensure internal billing practices are consistent with client policies, compliance standards, and patient-centered care principles.

Financial & Insurance Assistance Team Leadership

  • Supervise, coach, and support the Financial & Insurance Assistance team.
  • Ensure efficient and compliant patient access to:
  • Medicaid, ACA, and State of Connecticut insurance programs
  • Sliding Fee Discount Program eligibility
  • Patient payment plans and financial counseling
  • Maintain consistent and compliant eligibility determinations and documentation.
  • Monitor team schedules to maximize patient access to assistance services.
  • Oversee patient payment processing, internal financial reconciliation, and reporting.
  • Communicate policy updates and ensure staff adherence.
  • Foster respectful, compassionate, and professional patient interactions.



Qualifications:

Required Skills

  • Fluency in English required; Spanish and/or Portuguese strongly preferred
  • Strong leadership, analytical, and problem-solving abilities
  • Ability to interpret revenue cycle and patient billing reports
  • Experience working effectively with diverse populations

Education and Experience

  • Minimum of 4 years of medical billing experience
  • Minimum of 2 years of supervisory or team lead experience
  • Bachelor’s degree required, or equivalent relevant work experience
  • At least 2 years of experience in healthcare financial assistance, insurance enrollment, patient billing, collections, or related revenue operations
  • Experience in community health centers, FQHCs, or other healthcare settings preferred
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook

Knowledge and Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of healthcare revenue cycle operations and patient billing practices
  • Understanding of self-pay, sliding fee, and insurance billing workflows
  • High attention to detail, accuracy, and compliance
  • Ability to manage vendor relationships and internal billing functions at the same time
  • Excellent organization, communication, and time-management skills
  • Ability to handle confidential patient and financial information appropriately



Compensation

$27.00-$32.00 Hourly
