Title: Specialist - Metallurgical Technician
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
  • Individual will be responsible for tensile test requirements relating to Heat Treated parts, including but not limited to hardness, strengths, elongation, conductivity, and fracture location.
  • Must be able to set-up and operate all testing equipment.
  • Must be able to create required reports for documenting / communicating track results.
  • Must be proficient using CNC lathe and CNC mill in order to prep material for tensile, hardness and conductivity testing. Knowledge of Tinius Olsen pull test machines, Brinell & Rockwell hardness test machines, and proper preparation of micros and macros for grain flow.
  • Cleaning, etching, and testing samples with Nitric, Hydrochloric and Hydrofluoric acids.
  • Using a microscope for metallurgical analysis of micros and generating reports. Analysis includes High Temperature Oxidation (HTO), Eutectic Melting, Intergranular attack (IGA) pitting and attack depth measurements.
  • NADCAP Audit Support related to mechanical testing and metallographic analysis.
  • Must be able to maintain daily production requirements (SFC053) as well as perform routine maintenance, as needed. This includes troubleshooting breakdowns and preventative maintenance. Verify work and review quality to pre-determined specifications.
  • Knowledge and ability to read and interpret blueprints, shop drawings, specifications, S.O.I.'s, work instructions etc. Some training of employees with less knowledge will be required.
  • Responsible for data entry of CIMA for accurate labor reporting and part tracking as well as future SPC reporting.
  • Capable of learning AMS 2750 pyrometry requirements to be a back-up for the other technicians and able to perform tasks with minimal supervision.
EQUIPMENT UTILIZED IN POSITION:
  • Use of Tinius Olsen tensile tester, CNC lathe, CNC mill, belt and orbital sanders, conductivity meter, dimensional measuring tools, polishing & lab equipment, hazardous etching acids, Microscope, PC software, CIMA, and hand tools to make adjustments to mechanical devices related to the equipment.
Education & Experience:
  • High school education or equivalent or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Three to five years' CNC lathe experience required. Experience working in Inspection, Metallurgical Lab, and/or Heat Treat preferred.
  • Functional math skills required, oral and written communication skills, computer skills.
  • Calipers, micrometers, height gauges, and any other inspection equipment as necessary.
Work environment
  • Manufacturing sites, and office work environment
  • Requires regular movement throughout Paligen facilities.
  • May need to stand for long periods of time.
  • Work primarily in a climate-controlled environment with minimal safety/health hazard potential.
  • Work may require employee to work inside and outside with exposure to changing climate and noise.
  • May be requested to work a different shift.
