Accounting Specialist

Washington, DC 20008-3829, US Temporary
Compensation: $33.25 to $38.50 Hourly

We are looking for an Accounting Specialist to join our team on a Contract basis in Washington, District of Columbia. This role supports core accounting operations by managing complex entries, maintaining accurate reconciliations, and contributing to timely financial close activities. The position also partners with leadership and auditors to strengthen reporting quality, uphold compliance standards, and support ongoing financial projects.

Responsibilities:
• Prepare and review detailed journal entries, including accruals and other adjustments, to maintain accurate financial records.
• Complete balance sheet reconciliations, research discrepancies, and resolve outstanding variances in a timely manner.
• Contribute to monthly and annual close cycles by organizing account schedules and ensuring assigned tasks are finished accurately and on schedule.
• Develop and maintain supporting schedules for prepaid expenses and other significant accounts used in financial reporting.
• Examine backup documentation for completeness and accuracy to support closing activities and financial integrity.
• Compile audit-ready schedules and documentation while serving as a key point of contact for external audit requests.
• Assist with compliance-related accounting work, including support for Form 990 preparation and other required filings.
• Analyze financial information and provide insights that help internal stakeholders make informed business decisions.
• Recommend and support enhancements to accounting procedures and internal controls, while contributing to special projects and broader accounting support as needed.

Qualifications:

• Hands-on experience in accounting functions, including journal entries, reconciliations, and financial close activities.
• Working knowledge of accounts payable, accounts receivable, and billing processes.
• Demonstrated ability to perform balance sheet account analysis and investigate variances effectively.
• Experience supporting month-end close and preparing accurate account schedules and documentation.
• Familiarity with audit preparation and responding to requests for supporting financial materials.
• Knowledge of nonprofit tax reporting support, including documentation related to Form 990, is preferred.
• Strong analytical skills with a high level of accuracy, organization, and attention to detail.

Compensation

$33.25-$38.50 Hourly
