Sr. Accountant

Are you an experienced accounting professional who wants their work to make a difference? A well-established nonprofit organization in the Iowa City area is seeking a Senior Accountant to help strengthen financial operations and support programs that positively impact local families, youth, and communities. As the Senior Accountant, you'll play a key role in building sustainable accounting processes, supporting leadership, and ensuring the organization maintains strong financial stewardship of its funding and community resources.
What You'll Do
This is a highly visible role that combines hands-on accounting responsibilities with process improvement and financial support for organizational leadership.
Core Responsibilities:
- Lead month-end close, including journal entries, account reconciliations, and general ledger maintenance
- Prepare monthly financial statements and management reports
- Reconcile bank accounts, line of credit activity, and other balance sheet accounts
- Maintain fixed asset records and depreciation schedules
- Support, Establish, and document accounting procedures and internal controls
- Partner closely with executive leadership and operational staff
- Help create a strong financial foundation for future growth
Qualifications:
Qualifications
Required
- 5+ years of full-cycle accounting experience
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (or equivalent experience)
- Strong month-end close and general ledger experience
- Experience performing account reconciliations and preparing financial reports
- Proficiency in QuickBooks - Online
- Intermediate Excel skills, including formulas, data organization, and reporting
- Strong communication skills with the ability to educate and support non-financial stakeholders
- Ability to work independently and bring confidence, patience, and professionalism to a collaborative environment
Preferred
- Nonprofit accounting experience
- Grant accounting and grant reimbursement experience
- Experience improving accounting processes and internal controls
