Senior Construction Accountant

Dallas, TX 75240, US Full Time

We are looking for a Senior Construction Accountant to oversee financial operations for a portfolio of affordable housing and mixed-income development projects in Dallas, Texas. This position combines construction accounting, funding administration, and compliance oversight to ensure project costs are recorded accurately and reimbursement requests are submitted correctly and on schedule. The person in this role will work closely with project stakeholders to support timely payments, maintain audit-ready documentation, and help keep complex, multi-source developments financially aligned from construction through closeout.

Responsibilities:
• Manage end-to-end accounting activities for assigned development projects, ensuring each transaction is properly recorded by job, cost category, and eligible funding source.
• Prepare and submit recurring payment and reimbursement packages to public agencies, lenders, and equity partners, while monitoring approvals and resolving issues that could delay funding.
• Maintain detailed source-and-use reporting for each project, tracking commitments, expenditures, and deadline-sensitive funding requirements across multiple capital sources.
• Review contractor billing packages, supporting schedules, and requisition documents to confirm accuracy against approved budgets, contract values, inspection results, and project progress.
• Monitor change orders, retainage balances, and payment support documents such as insurance certificates, lien waivers, and tax forms before releasing funds.
• Coordinate with contractors, inspectors, lenders, and investment partners to answer questions, address documentation requests, and keep draw activity moving efficiently.
• Support accounting for development entities and partnership structures, including capital contributions, deferred fees, reserve activity, and other project-specific funding arrangements.
• Complete assigned month-end responsibilities such as journal entries, accruals, reconciliations, and tie-outs between project records and the general ledger.
• Assist with key affordable housing compliance and reporting activities, including cost certification support, basis tracking, and milestones tied to project conversion and tax credit requirements.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance.
• At least 5 years of progressive accounting experience, including 3 or more years supporting construction, real estate development, or affordable housing projects.
• Practical experience administering government-funded project draws and compliance reporting for housing or community development programs.
• Strong background in job cost accounting, contractor payment review, retainage tracking, and construction billing documentation.
• Experience working with layered capital structures that may include municipal funding, lender financing, grant sources, and equity investments.
• Advanced Excel skills with the ability to manage detailed reconciliations, funding schedules, and financial tracking tools.
• Familiarity with affordable housing partnership accounting and tax credit-related processes is preferred.
• Experience with construction or real estate accounting platforms such as Sage, Yardi, Viewpoint, Procore, or similar systems is a plus.
