Garnishments Specialist

Chattanooga, TN 37402, US Temporary
Compensation: $25 to $35 Hourly

We are seeking a highly skilled Payroll Garnishments and Withholdings Specialist to join a large, complex multi-state, multi-location payroll team. This role is responsible for the accurate administration, auditing, and resolution of employee garnishments, child support orders, tax levies, creditor garnishments, and other court-ordered or agency-mandated deductions.


The ideal candidate will bring deep hands-on garnishments experience, strong knowledge of multi-state payroll compliance, and advanced Workday payroll systems expertise. This person must be capable of not only processing garnishments and withholdings accurately, but also auditing existing processes, identifying risks, strengthening controls, and recommending process improvements across a high-volume payroll environment. *This position offers a hybrid work schedule, based in the Chattanooga, Tennessee area*


Key Responsibilities:

  • Administer end-to-end processing of payroll garnishments and involuntary withholdings, including child support, tax levies, creditor garnishments, bankruptcy orders, student loan garnishments, and other mandated deductions.
  • Review, interpret, and respond to garnishment orders to ensure timely setup, accurate calculation, prioritization, and remittance in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Audit garnishment and withholding transactions for accuracy, compliance, timeliness, and completeness across multiple states and payroll jurisdictions.
  • Evaluate current payroll garnishment workflows, controls, and documentation; identify gaps, process breakdowns, and compliance risks; and recommend improvements.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for garnishments and withholdings within the payroll team, supporting escalations and resolving complex employee, agency, and vendor issues.
  • Partner with Payroll, HR, Legal, Finance, and external agencies/vendors to resolve discrepancies, answer inquiries, and support compliance initiatives.
  • Maintain accurate employee payroll records and supporting documentation related to garnishment orders, releases, remittances, and correspondence.
  • Ensure payroll activities comply with company policies, internal controls, and applicable wage and hour, withholding, and garnishment regulations.
  • Support payroll testing, system updates, and process enhancements in the payroll system, particularly as they relate to garnishment configuration, deductions, integrations, and reporting.
  • Generate and analyze payroll reports, reconcile garnishment balances, and monitor exception reporting to proactively identify issues.
  • Assist with audits, compliance reviews, and year-end payroll activities as needed.
  • Contribute to standard operating procedures, job aids, training materials, and cross-training efforts to improve team effectiveness and continuity.

Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of payroll experience with a strong concentration in garnishments and withholdings in a high-volume environment.
  • Demonstrated experience processing and auditing payroll garnishment workflows for compliance and accuracy.
  • Experience supporting multi-state payroll operations across multiple entities and/or locations.
  • Strong hands-on experience with Workday Payroll or comparable payroll systems is required.
  • Knowledge of federal and state garnishment regulations, withholding order priority rules, remittance requirements, and payroll compliance best practices.
  • Ability to interpret legal orders, analyze payroll impacts, and resolve issues with a high degree of accuracy and confidentiality.
  • Advanced Excel and reporting skills preferred.
  • Excellent problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage competing deadlines in a fast-paced, deadline-driven payroll environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in a large corporate, shared services, or centralized payroll environment.
  • Experience working with third-party garnishment administrators or service providers.
  • Prior involvement in payroll process improvement, internal controls review, or audit support.
  • CPP or related payroll certification preferred.

Compensation

$25.00-$35.00 Hourly
