Staff Accountant

Portsmouth, VA 23505, US Full Time
Compensation: $70 to $80 Yearly

We are looking for a detail-oriented Staff Accountant to join a finance team in Portsmouth, Virginia. This role supports core accounting operations through financial analysis, reconciliations, reporting, and close activities while partnering with multiple departments across the organization. The ideal candidate brings a strong foundation in general ledger accounting, budget support, and audit coordination, along with the ability to manage deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities:
• Execute daily accounting tasks in line with established finance, payroll, and reporting standards while meeting required deadlines.
• Collaborate with teams across the organization to provide financial information and support broader business objectives.
• Prepare analyses and respond to requests for accounting data from various departments and leadership stakeholders.
• Contribute to month-end and period-end close activities, including reconciliations, journal entry support, and financial review.
• Assist with budget preparation and monitoring by comparing planned spending to actual results and summarizing key variances.
• Investigate account inconsistencies, identify incorrect postings, and resolve reconciling items in a timely manner.
• Support internal and external audit efforts by organizing documentation and assisting with requests related to financial records and controls.
• Partner with Purchasing to help ensure transactions are recorded with accurate coding and appropriate posting periods.
• Help track fixed assets, record project-related capital costs, and maintain monthly depreciation schedules.
• Participate in special assignments and help monitor accounting controls to protect the accuracy of financial processes and data integrity.

Qualifications:

• 3+ years of accounting experience in a staff accountant or similar role.
• Working knowledge of corporate tax, sales tax, and corporate tax return processes.
• Experience preparing journal entries and maintaining general ledger activity.
• Strong account reconciliation skills with the ability to research and resolve discrepancies.
• Understanding of debits, credits, and core financial reporting principles.
• Background supporting budgeting, audit activities, and month-end close functions.
• Experience with construction accounting or project-based cost tracking is preferred.

Compensation

$70,000.00-$80,000.00 Yearly
