Controller

A client of ours is looking for a Controller for a contract role to oversee all accounting, financial reporting, audit coordination, and fiscal operations for a growing nonprofit organization. This individual will play a critical leadership role in maintaining accurate financial records, ensuring regulatory compliance, and supporting organizational decision-making. The ideal candidate will have strong nonprofit accounting experience, proficiency with Blackbaud, and a successful track record managing external audits.


Responsibilities of Controller

  • Lead all day-to-day accounting and financial operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and month-end close.
  • Prepare accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
  • Manage the annual audit process and serve as the primary liaison with external auditors.
  • Ensure compliance with nonprofit accounting standards, donor restrictions, grant requirements, and applicable regulations.
  • Maintain and strengthen internal controls, accounting policies, and financial procedures.
  • Oversee budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow management activities.
  • Monitor grant funding and restricted contributions to ensure proper accounting and reporting.
  • Prepare and present financial reports to executive leadership and the Board of Directors.
  • Support strategic planning and organizational growth initiatives through financial analysis and recommendations.
  • Supervise and mentor accounting and finance staff.



Qualifications:

Skills/Qualifications of Controller

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; CPA preferred.
  • 7+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience, including experience in a leadership role.
  • Nonprofit accounting experience required.
  • Hands-on experience with Blackbaud Financial Edge or other Blackbaud accounting systems.
  • Proven experience managing annual audits and serving as the primary contact for external auditors.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, nonprofit financial reporting, fund accounting, and grant accounting.
  • Experience preparing and presenting financial information to executive leadership and Boards of Directors.
  • Expertise in budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, cash flow management, and internal controls.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills and proficiency with accounting and financial management systems.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, develop, and mentor accounting and finance teams.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining accuracy and compliance in a fast-paced environment.
