Staff Accountant

We are looking for a detail-oriented Staff Accountant to support a growing organization in the water and infrastructure sector based in Houston, Texas. This Long-term Contract position offers the opportunity to contribute across core accounting functions, including payables, receivables, reconciliations, and project-related financial support. The role is well suited for someone who enjoys hands-on accounting work, values accuracy, and can collaborate effectively with both finance and operations teams.

Responsibilities:
• Manage the full vendor payment cycle by reviewing, entering, and issuing payments for supplier invoices in a timely manner.
• Examine billing documents for accuracy and ensure expenses are assigned to the correct projects, cost codes, and accounts.
• Prepare customer invoices, post incoming payments, and maintain accurate accounts receivable records.
• Track aging balances, follow up on past-due accounts, and support collection efforts to improve cash flow.
• Perform reconciliations for bank accounts, credit cards, and key balance sheet accounts to maintain reliable financial data.
• Assist with month-end close by preparing journal entries, reviewing general ledger activity, and supporting account analysis.
• Partner with Project Managers to monitor project costs, address billing concerns, and help keep project accounting records up to date.
• Maintain vendor files, tax documentation, and compliance-related records while providing support for payroll and recurring financial reports as needed.

Qualifications:

• Minimum of 5+ years of experience in accounting, bookkeeping, accounts payable, accounts receivable, or a closely related finance function.
• Practical knowledge of general ledger activity, journal entries, reconciliations, and month-end closing processes.
• Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel with the ability to organize, analyze, and manage financial data efficiently.
• Demonstrated ability to handle multiple deadlines and shifting priorities within a fast-paced work environment.
• High level of accuracy, organization, and attention to detail when managing financial transactions and records.
• Experience supporting project-based or construction-related accounting, including job costing, is highly preferred.
• Familiarity with accounting systems such as NetSuite, Spectrum, or similar financial software is beneficial.
• Ability to communicate effectively with accounting staff, operational teams, and project leadership.

Compensation

$28.00-$32.00 Hourly
