interim Payroll Manager (contract)
We are looking for an interim Payroll Manager to join a growing organization in Dallas, Texas and lead day-to-day payroll operations across a multi-state, multi-entity workforce. This Long-term Contract position is ideal for a detail-focused individual who can independently manage complex payroll activities while delivering accurate, timely, and compliant results. The role offers the opportunity to partner closely with HR, Finance, and leadership teams to support employees and strengthen payroll processes in a fast-moving environment.
Responsibilities:
• Oversee end-to-end payroll administration for employees across multiple states and business entities, ensuring each cycle is completed accurately and on schedule.
• Execute regular semi-monthly, bi-weekly, and special payroll runs while validating earnings, deductions, incentives, and other pay adjustments.
• Maintain compliance with federal, state, and local payroll laws by managing tax withholdings, unemployment accounts, filings, and related reporting obligations.
• Establish and update payroll tax registrations in new jurisdictions as business needs expand into additional locations.
• Review payroll records and supporting documentation to preserve data accuracy, consistency, and audit readiness.
• Research payroll variances, resolve employee pay issues, and provide responsive support for payroll-related questions.
• Prepare payroll summaries, reconciliations, and reporting for finance leaders and other internal stakeholders.
• Assist with internal and external payroll audits and contribute to compliance reviews by supplying accurate records and explanations.
• Track legislative and regulatory changes affecting payroll and recommend adjustments to maintain ongoing compliance.
• Collaborate with HR, Finance, and leadership to improve payroll workflows, strengthen controls, and support best practices across the function.
Qualifications:
• At least 4 years of progressively responsible payroll experience, including ownership of full-cycle payroll processing.• Demonstrated success handling payroll in a multi-state environment with strong knowledge of applicable tax and compliance requirements.
• Experience supporting large employee populations across multiple entities or tax IDs.
• Hands-on background with payroll tax administration, filings, account maintenance, and jurisdiction setup.
• Familiarity with deferred compensation plans and related payroll considerations.
• Strong analytical ability, attention to detail, and skill in identifying and resolving discrepancies.
• Ability to manage competing priorities independently while maintaining accuracy in a fast-paced setting.
• Proficiency with payroll systems such as ADP Workforce Now, Paycor, or similar platforms, along with solid Microsoft Excel skills.
