Description:

The Accountant I supports the Colorado Public Safety Department by performing entry-level professional accounting and financial duties. This role focuses on maintaining accurate financial records, supporting budget and expenditure tracking, benefits-related accounting support, and ensuring compliance with state policies and procedures. The position is full-time and recurring annually for a 9‑month period (May through January).

Key Responsibilities

  • Support benefits-related accounting activities, including tracking, reconciling, and responding to inquiries related to benefits costs and transactions
  • Assist with day-to-day accounting operations, including general ledger entries, journal entries, and account reconciliations
  • Process accounts payable and receivable transactions in accordance with state and departmental guidelines
  • Monitor expenditures and assist with budget tracking and variance analysis
  • Prepare routine financial reports and assist with month-end and year-end close activities
  • Maintain accurate and complete financial documentation for audit and compliance purposes
  • Provide excellent customer service by responding professionally and timely to inquiries from internal staff, vendors, and partner agencies
  • Utilize Microsoft Excel to maintain spreadsheets, perform reconciliations, and analyze financial data
  • Ensure adherence to Colorado state accounting standards, policies, and internal controls
  • Perform other accounting and administrative duties as needed to support the department

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a closely related field (or equivalent experience)
  • Strong background in benefits-related accounting or financial support
  • Solid knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP)
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, including formulas and data analysis
  • Exceptional attention to detail and a high level of accuracy
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills
  • Ability to handle confidential financial and employee information responsibly
  • Demonstrated customer service skills and ability to communicate professionally
