About the Team
You’ll join a team where people work with integrity, inclusion, innovation, agility, collaboration and commitment. In practice, that means sharing ownership, solving complex problems together and staying connected to the customer context, the purpose behind the work and how each role contributes to meaningful outcomes.
Mission Software Systems (MSS) brings together expertise across intelligence, software, and cloud to deliver end-to-end capability supporting the full intelligence lifecycle, from planning through to dissemination and feedback. The team fosters a culture of innovation, leveraging modern engineering practices and shared infrastructure to rapidly build, test, and deploy software solutions across a range of environments, including cloud. MSS also plays a key role in advancing technology modernisation within Government, delivering scalable and adaptable solutions for complex enterprise challenges.
The Opportunity
This role is an opportunity to contribute to Bureau of Meteorology’s mission by delivering outcomes that matter. You will work as part of a multidisciplinary engineering team to understand priorities, solve problems and support delivery of geospatial solutions.
The successful candidate will be required to participate in a rotating on-call roster to support 24x7 operations of our highly available platform.
In this role, you will:
Work within a sustainment-focused engineering team supporting and enhancing existing geospatial platforms that underpin critical program outcomes, ensuring systems remain reliable, and fit for purpose.
Develop and maintain Python-based solutions to process, manage, and serve geospatial data, contributing to ongoing improvements and operational support activities.
Build capability in map caching technologies such as MapCache, adapting and optimising services and workflows to improve performance and scalability of geospatial applications.
Collaborate with engineers and stakeholders to troubleshoot issues, implement enhancements, and support integration across GIS platforms and supporting services within a dynamic delivery environment.
About You
We are looking for someone who brings judgement, curiosity and a collaborative approach to work that matters.
Essential for this role:
Experience developing software using Python, ideally in data processing, backend services, or similar environments.
Exposure to geospatial data concepts, formats, or workflows, with the ability to work effectively with spatial datasets.
Experience supporting and improving existing systems, including troubleshooting and maintaining applications in a live environment.
Ability to work within an agile team, contributing to design, development, testing, and deployment activities.
Understanding of software engineering practices such as version control, code review, and automated testing.
Advantageous, but not essential:
Familiarity with map caching technologies such as MapCache or similar tools.
Experience with GIS platforms such as ESRI or ArcGIS Server, including working with geospatial services or APIs.
Exposure to Linux environments, scripting, or deployment pipelines supporting geospatial applications.
Understanding of integrating geospatial capabilities into broader enterprise systems.
This role requires the successful applicant to be an Australian citizen and hold an NV-1 security clearance.
If this role interests you, we encourage you to apply. We value different experiences and are interested in the capability and potential you could bring.
