The Associate Director (AD) for the European Studies Center (ESC) works closely with the faculty Director, the Faculty Advisory Board, and UCIS/Pitt Global senior leadership to develop and operationalize a strategic vision for the center, including related coursework and student credentials, events, community engagement efforts, communications, and coordination with other units across UCIS, the University, the U.S., and internationally. The ideal candidate will be able to engage in discussions on long-term vision, but stay current on tools and policies impacting granular day-to-day tactical execution. The incumbent supervises the Center’s staff and student workers. In collaboration with the Director; the incumbent monitors and makes decisions related to the centers’ multiple budgets, attends annual local and national meetings, and diplomatically resolves problems. The incumbent will have primary responsibility for writing major grant proposals and overseeing the writing of smaller grant proposals and corporate and foundation solicitations, tracking and reporting for all grants, and overseeing the collection and analysis of data for all grants. The AD must be able to work with minimal supervision, represent the center in a professional manner, work efficiently on multiple projects, and maintain good rapport with staff, faculty, students, alumni, and representatives of international and domestic partner institutions. Occasional travel and weeknight/weekend hours required. Minimum 5 years of experience in a University setting, preferably with supervisory responsibilities. Master's required; PhD preferred. Experience with spreadsheets and budgets essential. Knowledge of Europe and ability to speak a European language in addition to English is also preferred. The Associate Director reports to the Director of the ESC.


Job Summary

Assists in the complex management of daily operations and concurrent administrative functions of a major University organizational unit or a major academic and research department within a school or college. Controls expenditures, develops projects, and ensures regulatory compliance.


Essential Functions
  • Assists in directing activities related to the daily operations of the European Studies Center (ESC). Manages multiple, concurrent administrative functions including finance, human resources, payroll, accounting, grants, facility operations, property control, purchasing, and security.
  • Facilitates strategic planning for assigned areas and assists in developing and implementing the overall departmental strategic plan and resource allocation.
  • Supervises ESC staff, including hiring, distributing and reviewing work, performance reviews, and documenting disciplinary actions and other human resource administration.Manages work schedules and approves timecards.Provides professional development opportunities.
  • Establishes performance goals and measures to evaluate success of assigned area of responsibility. Researches and analyzes measured success to develop and implement future programs, policies, projects, and long-range plans.
  • Ensures regulatory compliance and fiscal responsibility; controls expenditures and statements of accounts.
  • Develops and maintains effective working relationships across University departments and employees.
  • Maintains adherence to all regulations for all programs and activities.

Physical Effort

Little physical effort required. Duties are primarily sedentary. May be required to move objects up to 25 pounds occasionally.

Hiring Range: $72,000 - $90,000
