Accounting Specialist

We are looking for an Accounting Specialist to join our team in Merced, California in a contract capacity with the potential for a permanent role. This on-site role supports core accounting operations and requires someone who can manage financial records with accuracy, discretion, and strong attention to detail. The position offers the opportunity to contribute across payroll, payables, receivables, and reporting while helping maintain organized and reliable financial processes.

Responsibilities:

• Process payroll and support accounts payable activities with a high level of accuracy and timeliness.

• Maintain financial records related to payroll, vendor payments, incoming funds, retirement data, and other accounting documentation.

• Assist with improving and organizing accounting procedures and recordkeeping practices to support efficient department operations.

• Compile and prepare detailed financial and statistical reports by gathering information from multiple sources.

• Submit grant-related expenditure claims, prepare deposits, and ensure supporting documentation is complete and accurate.

• Reconcile account balances, investigate discrepancies, and resolve errors through careful research and follow-up.

• Respond to questions from internal departments by interpreting policies, procedures, and applicable financial guidelines.

• Safeguard sensitive employer and employee information by handling records with strict confidentiality.

• Organize and maintain filing systems so financial documents can be retrieved quickly and efficiently.

• Provide additional administrative and accounting support as needed to help meet departmental and agency objectives.

Qualifications:

• Associate degree in Accounting and at least 2 years of accounting experience, or equivalent combination of relevant education and hands-on experience.
• Practical knowledge of detailed financial recordkeeping principles and day-to-day accounting processes.
• Experience supporting payroll processing, including familiarity with payroll taxes and related documentation.
• Proficiency with accounts payable and payroll functions, with working experience in Paylocity and AccuFund preferred.
• Strong Microsoft Excel skills and comfort using spreadsheets and accounting databases.
• Ability to prepare accurate reports, reconcile accounts, and identify inconsistencies in financial data.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills with the ability to follow instructions and explain procedures clearly.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently, collaborate with others, and maintain confidentiality with sensitive information.

Compensation

$23.00-$23.00 Hourly
