Summary
The Shipping and Logistics Supervisor position is responsible for supervising employees engaged in shipping, warehouse, clean and box, finished goods, documentation, and logistics activities at Ferno (Wilmington). This position plans and assigns work, implements policies and procedures, recommends improvements to shipping methods, equipment, operating procedures and working conditions, and supports timely, accurate, cost-effective movement of product domestically and internationally. The supervisor will strive to maintain high employee morale and will respond diligently and effectively to personnel issues.
In addition, this role serves as the subject matter expert (SME) for shipping, logistics, customs documentation, import/export compliance, Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) classification coordination, and carrier/broker management. The role ensures domestic and international shipments are properly documented, classified, routed, and cleared in accordance with applicable regulations while supporting lowest total landed cost and on-time delivery.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:
- Serve as supervisor of documentation specialists, finished goods warehouse, clean and box, and shipping.
- Ensure effective employee relations. Provide employee coaching and development. Make employment decisions. Resolve employee issues through problem resolution.
- Track employee absenteeism and timekeeping.
- Work closely with peers on the Operations team (i.e. Demand Planning, Customer Service, Service, Manufacturing Engineering, etc.) to resolve issues and develop/ implement process improvements.
- Balance quality, productivity, cost, safety and morale to achieve positive results in all areas. Work to continuously improve in all areas.
- Manage department priorities from a daily, weekly, and monthly perspective.
- Close coordination with the Planning team to document & communicate the anticipated availability of finished goods for shipment against customer orders.
- Manage departmental performance measures, including visual controls, and provide regular progress reports to the manager.
- Manage assigned CAPA and PCS projects effectively and on schedule.
- Perform accident or safety related investigations.
- Perform annual performance appraisals with each employee.
- Determine the most efficient and economical routing and mode of transportation for inbound and outbound freight both domestically and internationally.
- Study and confirm Ferno compliance with all domestic & international regulations for both inbound and outbound freight.
- Oversee import and export customs documentation, including commercial invoices, packing lists, bills of lading, certificates of origin, and other required shipping documents to support accurate and timely customs clearance.
- Maintain, review, and coordinate HTS code classifications for imported and exported products in collaboration with internal stakeholders, suppliers, customs brokers, and freight forwarders.
- Research and communicate changes to customs regulations, tariff requirements, country-of-origin rules, Incoterms, and trade compliance procedures that may affect Ferno shipments, costs, or delivery timelines.
- Coordinate with licensed customs brokers, freight forwarders, carriers, and government agencies as needed to resolve customs holds, shipment delays, classification questions, entry discrepancies, and documentation issues.
- Support internal audits and recordkeeping for customs entries, HTS classifications, duty calculations, country-of-origin documentation, and freight-related compliance records.
- Provide oversight of the Unitsets building.
- Initiate investigations into causes of damage or shortages in consignments or overcharges for freight or insurance.
- Develop and manage Key Performance Indicators for department.
- Other duties may be assigned.
Indicators of Success for this Role
- No safety incidents across your areas of responsibility.
- No incidents of non-compliance with domestic & international logistics regulations.
- Few to no PCS’s connected to the Shipping activities, as the Shipping team follows their procedures and work instructions every day.
- Accurate HTS classifications and customs documentation are maintained, reviewed, and updated as products or regulatory requirements change.
- Customs holds, clearance delays, duty discrepancies, and broker-entry errors are minimized through proactive documentation review and timely issue resolution.
- Domestic LTL’s and international container/air freight shipments are delivered from Wilmington on time when the finished products are available.
- Weekly working sessions with Planning clearly identify “what” is going to be ready “when”
- Freight costs (inbound & outbound) are captured, managed, and reduced to the extent possible…. while always meeting customer expectations.
- 5S improvements in material storage areas, including the Unit sets building.

- 5 years experience of customs compliance, import/export documentation, HTS codes, tariff classifications, country-of-origin requirements, Incoterms, and coordination with customs brokers and freight forwarders.
- Experience using ERP, shipping, carrier, broker, or global trade management systems to prepare, track, audit, and report shipment and compliance information.
