Material Handler
Overview
The Material Handler is responsible for ensuring the timely movement, storage, and tracking of materials throughout the facility to support production and shipping operations. This role supplies production lines with required materials, transfers finished goods, maintains inventory accuracy, loading outbound shipments, and operates powered industrial equipment safely. Material Handlers are expected to work independently, communicate effectively, and contribute to a safe, efficient, and organized workplace.
Key Responsibilities
Material Supply & Production Support
- Deliver materials and components to production areas as needed.
- Stock point-of-use racks and production workstations.
- Support production changeovers by clearing work areas and replenishing materials.
- Monitor material levels and proactively respond to production needs.
Inventory & Material Tracking
- Use handheld scanners to transfer and track materials within inventory systems.
- Verify inventory accuracy and maintain proper material identification.
- Apply labels, license plate numbers (LPNs), and other required documentation.
- Maintain organized storage and staging areas.
Shipping & Finished Goods Handling
- Remove finished goods from production areas and transport them to shipping locations.
- Apply stretch wrap and secure finished goods for shipment.
- Stage finished goods according to shipping schedules and requirements.
- Ensure materials are properly stored and protected during transport and staging.
Equipment Operation & Safety
- Safely operate powered industrial equipment, including forklifts, tuggers, floor sweepers, and scissor lifts.
- Perform equipment inspections and report operating concerns.
- Follow all company safety procedures and material handling standards.
- Maintain a clean and organized work environment.
Continuous Improvement & Team Support
- Support team members and production operations as needed.
- Communicate material shortages, inventory discrepancies, and operational concerns.
- Follow established work instructions and company policies.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Previous experience in material handling, warehousing, logistics, or manufacturing preferred.
- Forklift certification or experience operating powered industrial equipment.
Technical Skills
- Ability to operate handheld scanners and inventory tracking systems.
- Basic understanding of inventory control and material flow processes.
- Ability to operate stretch wrapping equipment, scales, and material handling equipment.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
Interpersonal Skills
- Ability to work independently and make sound decisions.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to prioritize tasks and respond to changing production needs.
- Demonstrates reliability, flexibility, and professionalism.
Physical Requirements
- Lift, push, and pull up to 35 lbs. frequently and up to 60 lbs. occasionally.
- Bend, reach, lift, and handle materials below waist level and above shoulder level.
- Frequently climb on and off powered industrial equipment.
- Maintain visual awareness in all directions, including frequent head and neck rotation to look behind and around while operating forklifts, tuggers, and other mobile equipment.
- Stand, walk, and move throughout the facility during the work shift.
- Work overtime and additional hours as required to support production and shipping needs.
- Use hands to manipulate parts, operate scanners, move materials, and handle tools.
- Operate material handling equipment and packaging devices safely and effectively.
- Use visual inspection skills to read labels, inventory sheets, and shipment documentation.
