Position Description

Employees in this classification are responsible for providing professional nursing care in an assigned specialty or subspecialty clinic. They perform a variety of general and specialized nursing duties as part of a total health care team to provide the patient with complete evaluations. Employees in this position generally assist the head nurse in the supervision of other clinic personnel and may substitute for this person in the event of his/her absence. May supervise and instruct subordinate nursing personnel. Receives supervision from head nurse or physician, functions independently within guidelines. May supervise ancillary nursing personnel in the performance of certain tasks, and assists in training personnel. Work is performed under usual clinic conditions and requires a high degree of contact with patients, families, and other clinic personnel and outside professionals.

Major/Essential Functions

  • Provide nursing care to patients at the TTUHSC SON Combest Abilene Community Health Center (ACHC).
  • Supervise daily nursing operations, including staff scheduling, workflow, and performance.
  • Ensure the delivery of safe, high-quality patient care and maintain accountability for nursing services.
  • Assess patient health needs and develop, implement, and evaluate individualized, evidence-based care plans.
  • Prepare, operate, sterilize, and maintain medical equipment and assist with exams and procedures.
  • Obtain and document patient assessments, vital signs, interventions, and other clinical information in the EMR.
  • Assist with reports, case management, and follow-up care for patients, including those with complex needs.
  • Educate patients and families on health management, treatment plans, and preventive care.
  • Coordinate referrals and resources to promote continuity of care and improved patient outcomes.
  • Serve as a clinical resource for nursing, support, and clerical staff.
  • Assist the Clinical Department Administrator with the development, implementation, and evaluation of clinical protocols.


Occasional Duties

  • Other duties as assigned by Administrator.
  • Attend required institutional and departmental training sessions and complete required training(s) and CEUs.
  • Attend and participate in departmental meetings.


Required Qualifications

  • Graduate from an approved accredited nursing program; current RN license in the State of Texas or have the ability to transfer license to Texas.
  • A minimum of two years of Staff Nurse experience in a specialty area.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in a hospital, ambulatory clinic, or community-based setting.
  • CPR\\BLS Certified.
  • Electronic Health Records (EHR) experience.
  • Experience using medical equipment.
  • Experience in phlebotomy (lab\\blood).
  • Experience in collecting and processing lab specimens.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish.
